Toronto Regional Champions Campaign Protégé Program

The Toronto Regional Champion Campaign Protégée Program is a mentoring program connecting young women with Toronto's women councillors. In an effort to increase women's participation in municipal politics, the program aims to inspire and familiarize young women with the job of a municipal councillor. Participants will be matched with a woman councillor to gain insight into the work and experiences of a city councillor as well asthe work of the City of Toronto.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • A young woman between19 and 26 years of age;
  • Resident of the City of Toronto;
  • Have engaged with organisations such as tenant councils; school councils; youth, advocacy, arts, community, cultural, social or religious organisations; or have done some committee, volunteer or organising work; and
  • Can commit to fulfilling the time requirement between November 2013 and May 2014 of 4-6 daytime hours per month, a minimum of 3 daytime meetings and 3 evening seminars over 6 months.
  • Employees of the City of Toronto are not eligible to participate in this program.

This is an excellent opportunity for young women to explore what city politics is all about and to discover if you would like to become a municipal councillor.

Program Requirements/Commitment
The program commitment is from November 2013 to May 2014. Participation in this program requires the following:
  • (4-6 hours per month) – You must complete Bi-Weekly 3 hours day-time drop-in (Nov to May) in a municipal councillors office to either:
  • learn the day-to-day management functions in the councillors office, and/or
  • learn about a particular topic of municipal government by doing research with a councillor.
  • Attend a minimum of 3 day-time meetings including one council meeting, one municipal committee meeting, one meeting in the ward and produce a one-page summary highlighting what you have learned.
  • Attend 3 evening-time mentoring seminars.
  • Arrange for one presentation to be made by a woman councillor in your class or organisation to increase women’s participation in municipal government.
  • Write a small article in your school, college, community or local newspaper about your participation in this program.
