Toronto Downtown Jazz presents Jazz for the Teach

The 2014 edition of Jazz for the Teach features two interactive sessions geared towards middle and high school music teachers seeking to hone their jazz teaching skills. Jazz for the Teach takes place on Sunday, June 22 at The Paintbox Bistro, 555 Dundas Street East in Regent Park. From 12-2 pm, Andrew Scott and Lisa Martinelli lead a session on jazz fundamentals and small group playing; from 3-5 pm Paul Read leads a session on big bands. You are welcome to attend one or both sessions.

Jazz for the Teach – Jazz Fundamentals and Small Group Playing

Sunday, June 22, 12-2 pm, Paintbox Bistro (555 Dundas Street East)

Topics to include:

  • Demystifying improvisation
  • How to learn a tune by ear
  • Effective rehearsal strategies
  • Stylistic considerations: swing, ballad and bossa nova
  • The Rhythm Section—tips for improving time feel and accompaniment
  • Listening and communicating on the bandstand
  • How to accompany a vocalist
  • Jazz Resources - we'll share some of our favourite books and recordings!

Bring an instrument! Bring your voice! We’ll play some of the concepts as a group, and the session will conclude with a jam session for all participants. Sheet music and handouts will be provided.

Jazz for the Teach – Big Bands

Sunday, June 22, 3-5 pm, Paintbox Bistro (555 Dundas Street East)

Topics to include:

  • Repertoire
  • Rehearsal preparation (student and director)
  • Successful rehearsing
  • Stylistic considerations (eg. phrasing, dynamics)
  • Time and rhythm
  • Listening and hearing
  • Directing (conducting)

Interested participants may have the opportunity to conduct the house band (from Cawthra Park Secondary School) and receive feedback on their conducting.

Participation in Jazz for the Teach is free but registration is required. Please complete the enclosed registration form and return it by June 13th to secure your spot. You’ll also find enclosed more information on each of the clinicians. Paintbox Bistro will have a delicious brunch menu available, with full bar service including some very popular signature cocktails. (Brunch and bar service not included with Jazz for the Teach registration.)

Lisa Martinelli

Lisa Martinelli is an active vocalist and educator on the jazz scene in Toronto. She studied voice at Humber College, and continued her studies at the University of Toronto where she received her B. Mus and her B. Ed; she earned a Masters in Music from York University in 2011. Se has performed extensively with her own jazz quintet and has been honoured to make music with the likes of Ed Bickert, Peter Appleyard, Guido Basso, Gene Denovi, Dave Young and Ranee Lee. Whether it’s contemporary music for Michael Colgrass and the U of T symphonic chorus or backing up pop artists with the Toronto Symphony at Roy Thompson Hall, this versatile vocalist enjoys it all. Lisa is a full time Professor of Music and is Head of the Vocal Jazz Department at Humber College.

Andrew Scott

Andrew Scott is a guitarist/arranger, composer and educator. He has released three internationally recognized CDs as a leader (This One’sfor Barney; Blue Mercer; Nostalgia). His most recent recording project, Strange Music, features fellow guitarist Randy Napoleon, Neil Swainson and Archie Alleyne. Andrew is a Professor of Music in Humber’s School of Creative and Performing Arts where he oversees the Music Business and Music Marketing areas and acts in the capacity of Humber Music’s head academic advisor.

Paul Read

Paul Read is a Toronto-based composer and pianist who is also well known as a jazz educator. He taught at Humber College (’79-’91) where he led the top band for 10 years and served as Program Director and then as Director of Music. In 1991 he founded the University of Toronto jazz performance degree program (undergraduate and graduate degrees) and held the positions of Director of Jazz Studies and Director of Graduate Jazz Studies. He founded the National Music Camp Jazz Program where he directed the faculty big band for 19 years. His most recent recording is Arc-en-ciel by the Paul Read Orchestra (PRO), released on Addo Records.
