As you are aware your child will be sitting their Standard Assessment

Tests (SATs) very soon so now is the time for revision. The children are currently being supported through careful intervention and additional staff have been brought in to assist the year 6 team.

Literacy:
SPAG
The children will revise all aspects of spelling, grammar and punctuation. They will be revising the rules and conventions then practising their skills in writing and test format.
Reading
Children will continue to read for pleasure and be read to from a class novel. Guided reading sessions will consist of reading comprehension exercises and practise tests from sample papers. We cannot stress enough the importance of reading and any support from home can only be of benefit to your child in developing their reading and writing skills.
Numeracy:
We will continue to focus on all areas of maths in preparation for SATs. Children are working in different groups for different areas of maths depending on their understanding and needs. We are practising exam style questions using sample papers and are improving various strategies to find answers quickly. Can we ensure that you, as parents/carers, regularly practise timetables and mental maths with your child.
  • Homework:
    Spellings will be given out each Monday for the children to regularly practise at home. We are grateful for any times you can spend helping your child learn their spelling words.
    In preparation for SATs, Maths and Literacy homework will be given out as and when needed. We may be giving out more homework as the term progresses. Any children who do not return their homework on time will ‘catch up’ on Friday afternoon at the beginning of ‘Golden Time’ Please ensure you child completes and returns this homework promptly to help their learning.
    Reminders:
  • PE will be on Friday and children will be expected to have their full school PE kits in school (including sensible footwear for outdoor sports). It is advised that PE kits come in on a Monday and are left for the duration of the week as other opportunities for sport may arise.
  • SAM learning breakfast club continues to be held every morning and will do until SATs week, 9thMay 2016. This is a ICT based session to support SAT revision. Children can come into school from 8:15am through the usual way where year 6 teachers will be there to greet them. You will receive a letter about the club.
  • SAT Revision Club continues to be held twice weekly on Wednesday and Thursday, 3:15pm – 4:15pm. This club is very beneficial and valuable to your child’s learning in preparation for their tests. Therefore we would greatly appreciate your support in encouraging your child to attend.
  • Children will need a water bottle, clearly labelled with their name. Water bottles are available to purchase from the office at 50p each.
    Children will be able to purchase a snack from our healthy Tuck Shop for 30p each. They will only be permitted to buy one snack each day.

/ Art/Design and Technology:
Children will make a puppet by researching key features of dinosaurs and then design a dinosaur perfectly adapted to either the Triassic, Jurassic or Cretaceous period.
They will work from a design plan and create the structure of their dinosaur.
They will research skin colours and textures of modern living things and apply their knowledge to create the most suitable surface for their dinosaur model.
P.E.
Within P.E this term we will look at gymnastics. We will be working on balance and coordination to combine movement in order to present
R.E:
Children will compare Darwin’s ideas with some creation stories & with the Bible version.
A study of a main British religion – to be decided
Music:
We will be exploring a range of music linked to their end of year performance which is a musical. These sessions will also include drama.
ICT:
The children will generate and address research questions. They will use the internet to generate questions and answers about fossilised dinosaur eggs. Their challenge is to create backdrops for a short film in which they will use the dino-puppets to show aspect of dinosaur behavior. Then they will embed and edit the dinosaur movie into PowerPoint.
P.S.H.E:
The focus this term will be on anti-bullying.
