Topic: The History of Basketball

Introduction

  1. Who in here has experienced the excitement of basketball, by either playing it or watching it? If you didn’t answer yes to this question, then you are missing out, because after this presentation you will want to go outside and start playing.
  2. Today I am going to tell you about some of the various topics on basketball. Most of my information came from and my own personal knowledge.
  3. First, I will discuss the history and the origin of basketball. Secondly, I will tell you about my favorite basketball players. Lastly, I will discuss the future of NBA basketball, and what direction it is headed.

Body

I. First, the history and origin of basketball.

A. In 1891 the sport of basketball was invented.

1. James Naismith

2. SpringfieldCollege in Springfield, Massachusetts.

B. Basketball coming along

1. According to inventors.about.com the first rules for basketball were devised in 1892.

2. The iron hoop was introduced to the game in 1893; however another decade passed before the innovation of open ended nets came to be.

Transition Sentence: Now that I have finished discussing the history and the origin of basketball, I will now tell you about some of my favorite players in the NBA.

II. Information and statistics on favorite NBA players.

  1. Gary Payton
  2. He has played for the Seattle Supersonics, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, and the Miami Heat
  3. In 2006 he won his first NBA Championship while playing for the Miami Heat.
  4. His career average for points for game is 16.9.
  5. He has also won other numerous NBA awards.
  6. Tracy McGrady
  7. He is a 5 time NBA all-star.
  8. He was ranked 6th in scoring in the league during the 2004-2005 season.
  9. He came into the NBA straight from High School, and was drafted by the Toronto Raptors.
  10. Michael Jordan
  11. Some think that he is the greatest basketball player of all time.
  12. He won the MVP award 5 times.
  13. He has won 6 NBA Championships with the Chicago Bulls.
  14. He was a 10 time all NBA first team selection.
  15. He has lead the NBA in scoring for 10 seasons.

Transition Sentence: Now that I have introduced you to my favorite players, I would now like to discuss the future of the NBA.

III. The future of the NBA

  1. Expansion - Different Countries that are represented in the NBA
  2. China
  3. Mexico
  4. Argentina
  5. Canada
  6. Brazil

  9. Japan
  10. Taiwan

  12. Global Players
  13. The NBA consisted mostly be US born players, but the NBA has expanded their borders.
  14. The NBA now has players from all over the world.
  15. There are players from over 10 different countries all over the world.
  16. Some of the foreign players have made a good name for themselves in the league. For instance, Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki are two of the best players currently playing in the NBA.

Conclusion

  1. Small to big - Basketball has come from being very small, to becoming one of the biggest and most popular sports in the world. Some of my favorite players have played in the NBA, and I have seen some of their greatest moments. The NBA is becoming so big and popular worldwide, that the NBA is signing players from overseas to play in the NBA. There are also more games and events that are being shown or played in other countries.
  2. Review of points – Today, I have discussed the history and the origin of basketball, my favorite players, and the future and expansion of the NBA.
  3. Clincher – I’m glad that I was able to inform you, and maybe even entertained you about some facts about basketball and the NBA. With the NBA expanding I’m sure that you will see NBA basketball games now, and sometime into the future.
