Introduction

This scheme of work uses Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang to teach aspects of Design and Technology.

1 / Art and Design (1 week) / Worksheet 1: Pig-ticklers and other inventions
Work together to come up with fun farm inventions. Work individually to create own annotated design. / Children develop designing skills, including generating and developing ideas, clarifying a task, design proposals, communicating ideas, planning and evaluating.
2 + 3 / Literacy: Instructions (2 weeks) / Worksheet 2: Nanny McPhee’s Five Lessons
Discuss the need for rules and go over school and class rules.
Reflect on Nanny McPhee’s five rules.
Demonstrate how a Nanny McPhee ‘lesson plan’ might look.
Talk about the need to take responsibility for own actions. Children to identify an area that they need help with in terms of behaviour. They are to come up with a lesson plan for their own particular rule. / Read and use captions; write and draw simple instructions.
4 + 5 / Literacy: Understanding and interpreting texts
Engaging and responding to texts
Creating and shaping texts / Worksheet 3: The Person you need is Nanny McPhee
Discuss a scene from the film.
Describe how it would feel to be in that situation.
Work on ‘wow’ words to describe how it would feel, look, smell, taste and sound like.
Children work in groups to storyboard their scene. / Create short simple texts on paper and screen that combine words with images (and sounds).
