Meet Our Faculty

Dr. Denise Pilato has taught in the College of Technology at Eastern Michigan University since 2000. She currently serves as a Professor and Program Coordinator for the Master of Science in Technology Studies program and teaches in the Technology Studies Master and Doctoral programs. Her courses are related to the social impact of technology, including history, culture, and gender issues.

Her scholarly research agenda includes the study of 19th and early 20th century American women inventors. She regularly presents new findings based on primary original research on women inventors at national and international professional conferences and publishes on the topic in academic and popular journals.

In her spare time, Dr. Pilato enjoys traveling, learning Italian, collecting books from women writers from the 19th century, and any type of water activity, such as swimming and scuba diving. When reflecting on all of the places she has travelled to, her fondest memories are from the East Indies, Africa and Central America. It is her love of Italy’s rich culture that continues to bring her back. Graduate students can join Dr. Pilato for her study abroad course to southern Italy and Sicily. Graduate students are immersed in the exploration and analysis of ancient technology and contemporary values in Naples and Sicily.

Dr. Al Bellamy is a Professor for the Master of Science in Technology Studies program and teaches Technology Assessment, The Management of Virtual Teams, and the Theory of Technology. He teaches the popular, Technology Management 592 in Traverse City, Michigan. His expertise and professional interests are Emotional Intelligence and Management, as well as Computer Mediated Communications.

His professional and academic plans include continuing research on emotional intelligence, as well as completing a technology management book that he began not long ago. When he is not lecturing and doing research for publication, Dr. Bellamy enjoys traveling, fishing, going to plays and musicals, and attending performances from to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Trips to Island Lake Park, San Francisco, and The Grand Canyon were among his most recent and memorable places he traveled to. Although he plans to retire in two years, Dr. Bellamy plans to do continued research on mass customization and technology.

Student Spotlight: Kathleen Kargula

Kathleen DeLauro Kargula, a student in the Master of Science in Technology Studies program, presented her research at the Eastern Michigan University Graduate Research Conference in November of 2015. With her extensive research and guidance from Dr. Denise Pilato, she presented, “The American Side-Saddle Story: An Example of One Group Subjugated by Another Group” which looked at technology, gender norms, and issues of equality.

During her presentation, she welcomed questions from other disciplines. She felt it was an opportunity to broaden the scope of how she could explore the subject further. While she was happy to have supportive friends present, the conference allowed her to meet some new ones. She was also able to go to other presentations, ask questions, and learn what research was happening in other EMU programs and departments. There were many opportunities for cross-collaboration and for connecting with others. Kargula highly recommends graduate students participate in future EMU conferences. One of her many reasons is that the presentation of data provides practice that will be valuable in job interviews, and even later when presenting to co-workers and clients.
