Advanced Mathematical Decision Making (AMDM) Syllabus

COURSE DESCRIPTION: ADVANCED MATHEMATICAL DECISION MAKING ~ 12TH GRADE

This course will give students further experiences with statistical information and summaries, methods of designing and conducting statistical studies, and opportunity to analyze various voting processes, modeling of data, basic financial decisions, and use network models for making informed decisions. The course is project-based, so students will participate in group activities and will make presentations to the rest of the class on a regular basis. The prerequisite course is GPS Advanced Algebra.

Unit 1: Analyzing Student Data

Unit 2: Probability

Unit 3: Statistical Studies

Unit 4: Using Recursion in Models and Decision Making

Unit 5: Using Functions in Models and Decision Making

Unit 6: Decision Making in Finance

Unit 7: Network and Graphs

SUPPLIES: Students will need the following supplies: 3-ring notebook, pencils, colored pencils, high-lighter, graph paper, loose notebook paper.(Note: The Texas Instrument TI-30XS Multi-view Calculator will be used in class. Individual purchase of this calculator is encouraged.)

HALL PASSES: Each student will be allowed 2 hall passes per 8wks. On hall passes 3-5, the student will be required to make 15 minutes (for each H.P.) after school with the teacher. If the student exceeds 5 passes, the student will be referred to the office.

CLASS RULES: Students are expected to follow all school rules that are outlined in the student handbook including dress code and tardy policy. Students are expected to be in your seat and prepared for class before the tardy bell rings. Being prepared for class means that your math notebook, homework, sharpened pencil, and all mathematics materials are on your desk, and that you are working on the bell ringer activity before the teacher takes attendance. Students are expected to pay attention, take notes, and participate in class and to follow all class procedures outlined by the teacher. All bathroom and water trips during class will be discouraged unless a medical note signed by an administrator states that these trips are necessary. Time away from class without a medical note must be made up during afterschool detention. Work completed in ink will not be accepted. In summary, all students should:

Teacher reserves the right to substitute another appropriate consequence depending on the individual case.

Classroom Rules:

1.  Be in assigned seat when the tardy bell rings.

2.  Show respect to classmates, teachers and yourself.

3.  Bring ALL required materials to class daily.

4.  Absolutely NO food, drink, or candy/gum in class. Water in clear container will be allowed.

5.  Listen, follow directions, and stay seated unless you have permission.

Consequences:

1.  Verbal Warning

2.  Student Conference

3.  Parent Contact

4.  After-school Detention

5.  Office Referral

GRADING: The math department will be implementing the 3-2-1 grading system. Unit/chapter tests will count three (3), quizzes counting two (2) times, and homework/daily grades will count once (1). Students will receive a running yearly grade. SLO Assessment will count 10% of Final average.

MAKEUP WORK: Make-up work should be completed within three days of the absence or absences. If you are absent on the day of a test, you will be required to make up that test after school within a reasonable amount of days. When you return from being absent, it is YOUR responsibility to find out what you have missed. Zeros will be assigned for make-up work that is not completed within 3 days. (This includes assignments that are missed due to a school function or pre-arranged absence.)

NOTEBOOKS: Students are REQUIRED to keep a notebook which includes class notes, handouts, tasks, completed homework exercises (with corrections noted in class), and graded material. This notebook is for Math class only!! Notebooks should be kept up-to-date and should be used to study each night. Students should obtain missed class notes from a reliable peer if class upon any absence. Notebooks WILL be checked and graded periodically during the school year. It is your responsibility to bring your materials to class each day. Failure to bring class materials does not warrant additional time to turn in a homework assignment. Completing homework each day and understanding missed problems is the key to keeping up in a math class. Homework assignments represent the minimum amount of material you should work. Toombs County High School teachers are here to help students succeed. Students, however, must help themselves by asking questions and taking advantage of after school help sessions. The amount of work you put into the class will reflect the amount you will learn and the grade you receive. Please sign below to show you understand that you must work each day to keep up with this class.

NOTE TO PARENT/GUARDIAN:

Thank you for the time that was used to review what is expected of your child. I encourage you to continually monitor your child’s progress in each of his/her classes. Progress reports will also be sent mid-eight weeks for you to return.
