Actual salary £17,248 to £22,422
(pro rata of £21,909 to £28,462 – equivalent to Salary Band 5 of NHS nursing pay scale). Fixed term for 18 months in the first instance.
Annualised hours to comprise:
35 hours per week
8.30 am – 4.30 pm (Mon-Fri)
Term time (39 weeks of the year). Included in the 39 weeks are 8 non-contact days. Professional training must be completed on a non-contact day or out of term time.
Job Purpose
·  To provide a clinically effective, high-quality service of nursing, counselling and first aid care to students in order to support physical and emotional well-being.
·  To ensure the School fulfils its statutory responsibility to support students with long term medical conditions.
Key Areas of Impact
Professional
·  Adhere to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of professional conduct.
·  Use evidence-based practice to develop and maintain a high standard of nursing care to the students.
Responding to students
·  Managing medical room and day to day student illness.
·  Run nurse drop-in clinics during students’ lunch time.
·  Provide individual advice on sexual health.
·  First point of contact for students presenting with a medical health concern.
·  Provide talking therapy/counselling.
·  Management of health care plans for students with ongoing medical health conditions eg diabetes, glandular fever, eating disorders.
·  Liaise with the SENCO and outside agencies e.g. CAMHS in supporting the management of long term mental health conditions.
·  Involvement in multi-agency meetings.
·  Support the Designated Safeguarding Leads in responding to safeguarding concerns.
Information and Guidance
·  Act as an integral part of the Well-being team in promoting the Well-being programme at the School.
·  Lead the delivery of health and medical related topics within the Health, Social & Emotional Education (HSEE) programme including HSEE days and assemblies.
·  Support Learning Mentors in the delivery of HSEE.
·  Ensure the provision of a range of publicity materials relating to students’ health issues
Training
·  Provide first aid training for students.
·  Provide staff training for specific medical issues eg epipen.
·  Maintain own nurse training and network with others school nurses.
Administration
·  Contribute to the development and review of health related policies.
·  Maintain medical records on the School Information Management System (SIMS).
·  Ensure care plans are written for students requiring them, in liaison with students and parents.
·  Be aware of and maintain the recommended safe storage, usage and disposal of medical supplies and drugs.
·  Keep records of reported accidents for all members of the community.
·  Coordinate medical evidence to support the Exams Officer and SENCO with applications for health related special consideration for exams.
·  School’s point of contact for the Kent School Nursing Service.
·  Organise and supervise vaccinations in liaison with Kent School Nursing Service.
·  Advising trips leaders on medical issues of students and first aid arrangements.
·  Maintain overview of staff first aid training and liaise with AHT responsible for CPD to ensure appropriate level of trained staff.
·  Lead the coordination of evidence to maintain Healthy School’s status.
Supporting Parents and Wider School
·  Liaising with parents regarding students’ medical issues, including sign posting to outside agencies.
·  Contribute to information events for parents.
Knowledge & Skills:
·  Professional nursing qualification or specialist practitioner school nurse qualification.
·  Diploma or advanced diploma in counselling accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), or the National Counselling Society (NCS).
·  Membership of a professional body such as BACP, UKCP or NCS (desirable).
·  Relevant qualifications and experience relating to first aid provision.
·  An understanding of the developmental, emotional, social and educational issues of children and young people.
·  Knowledge of local mental health and CAMHS Service.
·  Knowledge of child protection and an understanding of family planning issues.
As a qualified nurse the post holder needs to renew their registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council every three years. To re-register they must:
·  have worked a minimum of 450 hours;
·  show that they are developing their knowledge and competence and keeping up to date in their practice;
·  complete a minimum of 35 hours ofprofessional study;
·  keep records of their professional development.
