In Tokaido, you are a traveler trying to have a rich and fulfilling journey along the titular road. The player who is furthest back on the road moves their piece forward each turn, but cannot move into spaces occupied by other players.

Each player takes a character card (which gives a unique ability during the game), places a colored token in the hole in the top-left corner, and takes the corresponding number of coins in the top-right corner from the bank. Each player also places a scoring token on 0. The traveler markers are shuffled and placed on the starting inn in a random order, one player per space.

The player whose traveler is furthest behind (farthest back on the road, farthest out on a branch) gets to play. They may move their traveler any number of spaces forward on the board, but cannot stop on a space occupied by another traveler. In a 2- or 3-player game, players may only stop on spaces on the road (no branches); in a 4- or 5-player game, players may stop on the same space as another player if there is an open space on a branch. After moving, resolve the action associated with the space, and score the action immediately:

  • Villages (Black) - Reveal the top four cards of the souvenir deck. You may buy any, all, or none of the items shown, paying coins to the bank. You receive points for accumulating sets of unique items, indicated by the symbols in the bottom-right corner. The first item in a set is worth 1 point. The second, third, and fourth items in a set (whose symbols must be different from the preceding items) are worth 3, 5, and 7 points. You may collect any number of complete or incomplete sets. Discard any unsold items to the bottom of the deck.
  • Farms (Yellow) - Collect 3 coins from the bank.
  • Hot Springs (Teal) - Draw the top card of the hot spring deck and earn 2 or 3 points.
  • Temples (Red) - Donate at least one coin to the temple, placing donated coins in a stack on the top-left section of the board. Earn one point for each coin you donate.
  • Panoramas (Green, White, and Blue) - Take the next (moving to the right) section of a painting from the supply, corresponding to the color of the painting you land on. The first (left-most) section of each panorama is worth 1 point; subsequent sections are worth 2, 3, 4, and 5 points (the green panorama only has three sections; the white panorama has four sections). You may only collect pieces to create one of each panorama.
  • Encounters (Pink) - Draw the top card of the encounter deck and resolve its effect, which may include drawing cards and/or scoring points as indicated above.
  • Inns (Orange) - All players must stop at the inn, and wait for other players to catch up. As soon as the first player arrives at the inn, they secretly draw X+1 cards from the inn deck (where X is the number of players), and may choose one food to buy. If they buy a food, they reveal it, and score 6 points. However, you may not buy any food you’ve previously purchased. Any unsold foods are set aside; the next player to arrive at the inn may buy one of the remaining foods. After all players arrive at the inn, remaining inn cards are discarded to the bottom of the deck, and play resumes with the player furthest out on the inn's branch (the last player to arrive).

After all players have reached the final inn, the game is over. 3-point achievement bonus cards are awarded to the first player to complete each panorama, the players who had the most encounters and stops at hot springs, the player who spent the most on food at inns, and the player who collected the most souvenirs (in the case of a tie, all tied players score 3 points). Also, points are awarded for players who donated to the temple: The player who donated the most coins gets 10 points, the next most generous player gets 7 points, then 4 points, and any other donors get 2 points. Tied players each receive the points for that rank. The player with the highest score wins. In the case of a tie, the player with the most achievement cards is the winner.
