Cleland met and discussed with Kate barriers surrounding non-motorized commutes in a rural, Appalachian community.

Jackie Starcher made a motion to approve the July 28thmeeting minutes and Paul Muellerseconded it.

Updates:

The CHC Promotional Video should be available approximately early October. The video shoot was a success and Cleland believes the video will look very professional and represent the coalition well.

The Eastern Garden project has become more than the initially discussed after school program. Administration has decided to offer it as a curriculum/ elective for students to take during school hours. Bill Salyer will be teaching the class.

The official Request for Proposal for Creating Healthy Communities was released. The continuation application is due by 4:00 PM on August 31st, 2015. To date, the work plan and budget are near completion and the narrative portion has been started. Cleland is confident about the progress made thus far.

Since the last coalition meeting the asphalt at the Mulberry Garden site has been removed. Don Shaffer was able to coordinate the removal; however, from this point on will be stepping down as the primary contact for this project to focus on his health. Cleland emphasized that Don’s health is a priority and that others will be able to step in and take charge of this project in his absence.

The 5K Mud Run is this weekend: 8/29/2015, as is the food demonstrations at the Farmers’ Market: 8/30/2015. Registration for the 5K is available online or same day registration begins at 7:30 am. The race is scheduled to begin at 9 am. The Food Demonstrations at the Farmers’ Market will begin at Noon and last until 2 pm. The chef will demonstrate 4 different recipes from the produce guide purchase from Rural Action.

New:

Cleland brought each coalition member promotional materials for viewing: Success story booklet, and the CHC Meigs County tri-fold. Leanne Cunningham said she could distribute the tri-fold at the Southern Local School District open house for the upcoming school year.

Cleland mentioned the potential 2016 projects and expressed concerns about the Splash Park that was suggested for Middleport as an active living strategy. David Williams and Associates, a parks and playground equipment company provide an estimate for the spray ground. The lowest potential cost for a spray ground would be $50,000 to $60,000 depending on how the water is facilitated and if it is recycled. Cleland expressed the Village of Middleport would need to provide supplemental funding and that CHC could not support that large of an expense. Mayor Mike ensured Cleland that the Village of Middleport could provide supplemental funds to aid in the purchasing of the spray ground. In addition to that, Mayor Mike expressed that he would like to start a Middleport Village health council/ coalition/ forum so residents could be involved in the decision making process for active living and healthy eating initiatives within the community.

Cleland asked if there were any further questions or concerns.
