Tobacco Free Generation Campus Initiative (TFGCI) Field Coordinator

Consultant Responsibilities/Deliverables

Summary of Role

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Tobacco Control Initiatives in the Center for Tobacco Control, the Field Coordinator will provide technical assistance tothe grantees of the Tobacco-Free Generation Campus Initiative grant program and ensure appropriate integration of tobacco control information and resources into eachgrantee’s tobacco prevention activities. The Field Coordinator will collaborate with ACS CAN, ACS Division Health Systems, ACS Community Engagement, ACS Colleges Against Cancer and Relay for Life chapters, local and national NGOs and other agencies.

With regard to the following responsibilities, “primary responsibility” denotes areas of activity where the Field Coordinator will work with the Director of Tobacco Control Initiatives and other partners as listed above, but has ultimate responsibility for ensuring that the deliverables are achieved.“Shared Responsibility” denotes areas of activity where the Field Coordinator shares a role in achieving deliverables along with the Director of Tobacco Control Initiatives and other partners and shares responsibility for success in achieving these deliverables.

Reporting (primary responsibility)

●Report to the Director of Tobacco Control Initiatives, Center for Tobacco Control, through weekly (~ 30-minute) calls, as well as other needed communications, to discuss activities and recent developments involving grantees. Provide a brief weekly report by email with the week’s highlights.

●Provide monthly progress report for each granteeto the Director of Tobacco Control Initiatives by the 5th of each month.

●Serve as a key representative on behalf of ACS to any webinars/calls/meetings that may take place regularly at grantees’ campuses, including those held by campus taskforces and coalitions. Hold monthly joint information and strategy calls with grantees so that they are informed of activities and engagement opportunities.

●Hold monthly or bi-monthly calls with other field coordinators to update and learn from each other.

Provide technical assistance to grantees (primary responsibility)

●Under the supervision of the Director of Tobacco Control and in conjunction with the institutional task forces, oversee the planning and adoptionof the new campus policy.

●Drive implementation and enforcement of the new campus policy and provide modifications as needed throughout the project in conjunction with the Director of Tobacco Control Initiatives and the college taskforces.

●Utilize known campus policy best practices and new ideas, as appropriate.

Relationship building (primary responsibility)

●Work with grantees to identify a list of key contacts within each college/university with whom you will keep close and frequent contact. This can include faculty, staff and students who are working on the tobacco-free project on campus(Due end of November)

●Secure initial meetings with a majority of key contacts within each institution. (Due mid- December)

●Assist colleges/universities to build a diverse taskforce (if they don’t already have one) representing all key stakeholders (e.g. students, staff, faculty, administration). (Due by end of December)

●Serve as a liaison for every grantee schoolto administration or other entities, as needed, to gain support for strong tobacco-free campus policies. (Ongoing)

●Meet with student/staff/faculty members, as needed. (Ongoing)

●Work with grantees to develop a calendar of campus events to recruit supporters and promote the new policy and attend at least one event at each grantee school.

Media Relations (shared responsibility)

●Working with the Director of Tobacco Control initiative and the grantees, prepare press releases, as needed.

●Assist grantees in identifying, educating and briefing appropriate spokespersons for the campaign.

●In collaboration with theCenter for Tobacco Control and expert staff/consultants, enhance social media outreach via announcements, events and milestones related to the campuses’ efforts.

●Identify personal stories on campus from students, faculty and staff, related to secondhand smoke exposure,environmental concerns, campus safety and/or other relevant topics for possible use in media.

●Prep volunteer spokespersons (student/staff/faculty) for media opportunities.

●Along with ACS Inc. and CVS communications teams, develop and execute a social media plan that includes the use of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc.

Production of TFGCI Materials (shared responsibility)

●Review any TFGCI materials(e.g., taskforce materials, fact sheets, newsletters and media materials). Ensure all materials are uptodate and follow ACS, Inc. best practices and key messages with assistance from the Director of Tobacco Control initiatives.

●Develop/update TFGCI templates and other materials for campus use with assistance from the Director of Tobacco Control Initiatives and ACS’s media/communications teams.

Additional Responsibilities

●Develop and execute an education/recruitment event for TFGCI’s second round of RFPs for other colleges to be held in November 2016.

●Serve as an expert on all facets of the TFGCI grant program, including key messaging, research/science, deal-breakers and fundamentals of developing, implementing and enforcing smoke-/tobacco-free campus policies.

●Travel frequently/as needed to grantee schools.

●Limited travel to Atlanta (ACS headquarters) to meet with the Director of Tobacco Control Initiatives and other staff.

●In collaboration with the Director of Tobacco Control Initiatives and other staff, monitor science and trends, emerging issues and best practices for advancing tobacco control strategies on college campuses.

●Prepare presentations and engage in related organizational and communications activities on campus.

●Attend trainings, as needed.

4. KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
FORMAL KNOWLEDGE:
  • Bachelor’s degree required, with emphasis in health policy, environmental health, public health or related field a plus
  • Knowledge of public health principles and policies

(PREFFERED) SKILLS:
  • 1-2 years of experience in planning and implementation of public health or other policy initiatives
  • Some experience working with colleges and universities
  • Some experience with and knowledge of community organizing and advocacy
  • Ability to effectively work with college students, staff and administration
  • Ability to coordinate and manage projects effectively, consistent with ACS’s mission and goals
  • Ability to work and collaborate effectively with multiple constituents
  • Outstanding interpersonal, relationship management and communication skills, including written communication and public speaking
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
OTHER COMMENTS:
  • This is a consulting opportunity requiring 25-30 hrs./week (please note that sometimes it will be much less and other times it may be a bit more, depending on the needs of the institutions to which you’ll be providing support).
  • We expect that the consultant will not have any other full-time work obligation; another part-time, evening/weekend job may be OK
  • We expect that the consultant will be able to work form their current location
  • We will provide a monthly stipend (no benefits) and reimburse for all required travel
