Summary
The Dogs Trust Campaigns department is responsible for delivering high profile campaigns with the objective of ending the destruction of healthy dogs and encouraging responsible dog ownership.
We’re seeking a Regional Campaigns Manager to help construct, develop and lead the newly created Scotland Campaigns Team. This team will help support the delivery of Dogs Trust campaigns in Scotland by focusing on community engagement, including working with local partners e.g. local authorities, and the delivery of local events. There are four other existing Campaigns teams in the UK. These are located in Wales, Northern Ireland, the North of England and London and the South East of England.
Three positions are being made available in the Scotland Campaigns team, with the Campaigns Manager holding responsibility for the line management of a Campaigns Officer and a Veterinary Nurse.
The Campaigns Manager will setthe Scotland teamstrategy and objectives, and be responsible formanaging the team’sbudget and resourcesand driving excellent performance.
Reporting into the UK Campaigns Manager, the post-holder will act as the key point of contact for communication with the Campaigns team and other Dogs Trust departments at Head Office. This includes working with the Public Affairs team in London to support public affairs activity focused on the Scottish Parliament and Government, Scottish Members of the House of Commons, Members of the European Parliamentand local authorities.
A clean and current driving license is essential, as travel is required.
Duties and responsibilities
Regional Campaigns
  • To develop and deliver a campaigns strategy for Scotland, in line with Dogs Trust aims and objectives and in support of the overall campaigns strategy.
  • To develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of animal and dog welfare issues in Scotland, identifying the keys areas and audiences where our support and assistance should be targeted and implementing appropriate and agreed local campaigns and projects.
  • To monitor and evaluate the impact of campaigning work in Scotland, providing regular updates to the UK Campaigns Manager and reviewing activity in light of evaluation.
  • To take forward Dogs Trust’s neutering and microchipping initiatives, as directed.
  • Co-ordinate local roadshow events to promote microchipping, neutering and responsible dog ownership.
  • Develop good, productive relationships with local authorities, vets, kennels and other key organisations, highlighting Dogs Trust campaign activities and seeking support for joint initiatives.
  • To lead on PR and local events to promote Dogs Trust campaigns in the Scotland.
  • Undertake local press work in conjunction with the Communications team and to keep them updated as necessary.
  • To work with the Public Affairs team in London to support public affairs activity focused on the Scottish Parliament and Government, Scottish Members of the House of Commons, Members of the European Parliament and local authorities. Keep the Public Affairs team updated as necessary.
  • To represent Dogs Trust at external meetings when necessary and keep upto date with the latest campaigns and public affairs developments.
Team Management
  • To lead, manage and develop the Scotland Campaigns team.
  • Devise SMART objectives for all staff each year within the context of Dogs Trust’s strategy. Manage their performance against those objectives.
  • Carry out annual Staff Appraisals, within the required deadlines, giving constructive feedback and ensuring that the highest standards of performance are achieved. Ensure that training needs identified at appraisal are met during the course of the year, working with the Training Manager in London as necessary.
  • Travel as required across the region to oversee team’s work and events.
  • Ensure the team maintains a fruitful and positive working relationship with the Rehoming Centre team and other remote-based staff at the location.
General
  • To monitor expenditure against the Scottish Campaigns Team budget, ensuring all expenditure is appropriate and in line with the budget, and to forecast and plan for future expenditure.
  • Ensure excellent administration and record keeping, including regular updates to Petlog and having regular correspondence with councils.
  • To conduct all activities within relevant legal frameworks, best practice guidelines and Dogs Trust’s brand guidelines and overall tone of voice.
  • To comply with all Dogs Trust policies and procedures including Health and Safety.

Additional Activities

  • Provide regular reports to the UK Campaigns Manager and Head of Campaigns as necessary.
  • Any other reasonable duties.

Person Specification
Criteria / Essential / Desirable
Professional / Technical Qualifications / People management qualification.
Experience & Job Knowledge / Demonstrable experience of successfully managing teams and monitoring budgets.
Experience of producing campaigns and/or project materials, such as leaflets and website copy, and communicating with a range of audiences.
Experience of organising events and event management.
Experience of working with the media. / Charity experience.
Understanding of national and local Scottish political systems and basic knowledge of dog welfare legislation.
Knowledge of dog welfare issues in the region would be desirable.
Skills & Competencies / Demonstrable people management skills, including the ability to supervise and manage staff working remotely.
Ability to set clear objectives for the team, ensuring each person understands their role and responsibilities and managing each individual to do their best.
Excellent verbal and written communication, including the ability to write clearly and concisely.
Used to working to deadlines.
