The Roanoke Chapter of the
The Girl Friends, Inc. is part of a national organization of approximately 1500 professional women in forty-seven chapters from coast to coast. The mission of the organization is to exhibit friendship through networking projects across America and to support community, cultural and educational agendas. The Girl Friends, one of the oldest organizations of African American women in the United States, was founded in 1927 in New York during the creative period of the Harlem Renaissance.
Attached is information on the three scholarships that are being offered to high-achieving, African American students from the following area- Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Lynchburg, Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Botetourt, and Salem. Below is a brief summary of each scholarship.
- The Constance J. Hamlar Scholarship is to assist a student at a community college or a four year accredited institution. The $300.00 scholarship will assist a student with the cost of tuition, books and/or other mandatory fees.
- The $500.00 Roanoke Chapter’s Girl Friends Scholarship is to assist a student who plans to attend an accredited four (4) year college or university with the cost of tuition and/or fees.
- The National Chapter’s $1000.00 to $1500.00 Girl Friends Fund Scholarship is to a high school senior that has been accepted to a four-year institution. This award is renewable for up to four years, provided applicable academic requirements are met by the scholar.
- Scholarship eligibility requirements are detailed on the applications.
Attached are the detailed scholarship applications to be disseminated to eligible students. Please announce the scholarships and distribute the materials in accordance to your school’s policies. All completed applications must be returned on or before February 13, 2017.
