Aims /
  • To enable the student to practice as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and in complex and unpredictable situations
  • To enable the student to develop clinical reasoning and critical reflection for lifelong practice
  • To promote the values and ethics of the health care professions

Learning outcomes/objectives / On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate effective communication and effective inter and intra-personal skills when dealing with patients, carers and members of the Multi-disciplinary care team
  2. Critically evaluate their own clinical practice to facilitate enhanced patient care
  3. Select justify and implement therapeutic interventions for a variety of foot and ankle pathologies and refer to other agencies as required
  4. Demonstrate a bio psychosocial approach to patient assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning

Content / This module enables the student to integrate theory in to clinical practice at a higher level. This will include the management of a varied caseload focussing on the assessment, management and treatment of the high risk patient. Clinical learning will be enhanced by the adoption of a multi-disciplinary approach involving medical and pharmacy students. The students will practice in different clinical environments including: clinical education within the clinical school and work-based learning as part of an NHS podiatry team. Students will increase their knowledge and improve their clinical skills by learning in out-patient departments, hospital wards, community clinics, patient’s homes, surgical theatre.
Teaching and learning strategies / Clinical practice both in-house and in the NHS, observation, facilitated ward round, patient demonstrations, facilitated post clinic clinical reflection sessions, clinical supervision & supervision of lower year podiatry students, surgical theatre practice, post clinic student led seminars.
Learning support / A minimum of 2 weeks of Placement to local NHS trust, clinical placement at Leaf Hospital, module team and personal tutors. Use of libraries and other learning resources within the University of Brighton and other medical establishments, StudentCentral.

Both parts must be passed. The marked element must be passed at 40% or above.
Brief description of module content and/or aims (maximum 80 words) / The student will develop their knowledge and clinical practice skills in a variety of clinical settings (see above).There will be an opportunity to work with all other members of the health and social care team and to exchange ideas and review best practice with peers, tutors and other allied health professionals. It is intended to focus on a holistic approach to patient care and to enable the student to critically appraise podiatric management in a comprehensive and knowledgeable manner.
