Kilkenny County Council Arts Office Exhibition ‘The Sixth Element’ by Students of the Advanced Certificate in Fine Art at the Ormonde College of Further Education
Ormonde College of Further Education students pursuing its Advanced Certificate in Fine Art will be holding an exhibition of their work in the Watergate Theatre in Kilkenny City from 23rd April to 28th May 2010. This will be a great chance to see the hard work done by the students throughout the year, and is a wonderful opportunity for the students themselves to get their work displayed in such a prestigious exhibition space in the city.
The Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Fine Art was introduced as a follow-on to the already existing, and ever popular, Level 5 Certificate in Fine Art (Portfolio Preparation) course in September of 2009. The course is uniquely designed to prepare artists for life in the creative sector, with modules including Marketing, Sales Presentation and Exhibition Organisation studied alongside Drawing, Painting and Combined Materials.
The exhibition gets its title from the fact that the Advanced Certificate in Fine Art is a F.E.T.A.C. Level 6 course. Each of the students submitted four works for the exhibition, and from each of these one piece per student was selected for the exhibition. The work on display shows a wide variety of techniques and styles, from traditional landscape to abstraction.
The event is of enormous importance to the students involved, who are currently busy creating the magical work that will make this exhibition such a success. The following is an idea of the variety of work on show at the exhibition:
Andrea Saint Blaise: Andrea's works are “visual analogies based on my interpretations of human behaviours and capabilities”.
Joann Downey:Joanne “Has always tried to capture the look and reflections of water to the best of her ability”.
Karen Tobin: Karen's work is mainly concerned with “Authenticity and Freedom vs. Peoples' expectations of you”.
Lynda Mc Donald: Lynda “tries to explore identity through its absence and define it by what is left behind”.
Eamonn J. Downes: Eamonn says he “specialises in oils on canvas which he finds very stimulating and hopes this will be reflected in his work”.
Joe O'Toole: Joe's work “starts out with an idea, but as the painting develops it often takes different turns along the way”. Movement colour and texture play a major part in his work
Jim Byrne: Jim's main interest is “landscape and urbanscape” and his inspiration comes “from the beauty he beholds almost everyday from the many masterpieces on display in galleries worldwide”.
Tanya Bolger: Tanya states “I like to create non-human life as, to me, it is the freedom to explore form without narrative”.
Rachel Gamble: Rachel's work is “based on a dream image of an 'octo-woman' in black and white dress that has a quality of attractiveness and a sense of danger.”
Eoin Coffey: Eoin likes to create work that will have a “lasting effect”. His work deals with the subjects of “politics, global issues, spirituality and human relations”.
Jane O'Keefe: Jane's work “concentrates on elements of landscape, particularly rock and stone.” She aims to “produce textured oil paintings that evoke a feeling of timelessness, stillness and the passing of time”.
Teresa Tomlinson: Teresa “puts a touch of irony (often depicted in red) to figurative realism. She works mainly in oils with other mediums coming into play”.
Kay McMillian: Kay “Works in the medium of oils and combined materials.” Her current work consists of “figurative abstract pieces which deal with human domesticity through the hidden narrative.”
Exhibition ‘The Sixth Element’ in the Watergate Theatre, Upstairs Gallery from Friday 23rd April to Friday 28th May 2010.
Opening hours: Monday-Saturday 10am–7pm, Sunday 2pm–6pm

Vanessa Daws – ‘Kilkenny at last…!’ – Follow the Artist in Residence Blog
Galway based artist Vanessa Dawes has been artist in residence in Kilkenny County Council Arts Office, no. 76 John Street since 6th April and has had a baptism of fire to the venue and her work here!

Sneak a preview here of her first post to the blog:
‘Kilkenny at last…!’
‘So this is it, my artists residency begins in Kilkenny No.76 formally No.72, a dream come true.
I drove down a few days early to unload all my materials and equipment at the gallery before the bank holiday weekend. This also gave me a chance to spend the weekend getting to know Kilkenny, and to try to find people to swim with, especially down the River Nore that runs through Kilkenny and right past the arts office….
My art is a combination of painting, sculpture and more recently in-corperating film and animation. Water has always played an important role in my work, recently I have been using water, whirlpools and tornados to represent an internal energy within us all, my art work creates stories that question ideas on how we control this energy, if that’s at all possible; and the consequences of our actions.’

Creative Training Programme for Kilkenny Childcare Groups
Kilkenny County Council Arts Office believes in excellence when it comes to the provision of services for young children. We also recognise the inseparable nature of care and education as essential to the provision of quality early learning experiences. Therefore our investment in early child care and education began in 2007 when we held our first Creative Training Programme for Kilkenny Childcare Services. Activities included training in music, visual arts, story telling and drama. We further developed this programme in 2008 working in partnership with Playtrain UK, an organisation that shares similar values as the Arts Office and other service providers in promoting and encouraging ingenuity and creativity. We expanded the repertoire at this point by adding dance, yoga and movement to the programme.
We are now planning a new programme of creative training focussing more intensively on two areas as highlighted in our 2008 evaluation of activities. Therefore, the two art forms we will focus and expand upon initially are the following:
- Visual Arts Programme
- Yoga and Movement Programme
We will continue to work with Playtrain whilst also expanding on local partnerships, to include the Kilkenny County Childcare Committee and the Butler Gallery. Our programmes also fulfill many of Síolta’s criterions particularly in relation to the following Standards as stated in their ‘National Quality Framework for Early Childhood Education’.
The initial training programme will be in Yoga and Movement and is taking place in April. This course will demonstrate how practitioners can develop exciting and stimulating ideas for movement using yoga with preschool children. The session will provide practical ways in which movement can be explored through a variety of resources including music, props and books and, at the same time, promote the benefits of flexibility and healthy exercise for young children. Activities include:
- Techniques, exercises, postures and games that are ideal for use in regular classrooms and playgrounds.
- How yoga teaches relaxation as an essential life skill.
- How yoga and movement teaches children about their bodies to enhance self confidence, calm mind and uplift spirit- An essential life skill!
- Explore traditional yoga postures, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques through a creative story based approach.
We will continue the programme focussing on the visual arts in October.

Exhibiting during the Kilkenny Arts Festival?
Firstly it is important to point out that the Kilkenny Arts Festival is managed by a separate organisation to the Arts Office of Kilkenny County Council.
Contact details:
Kilkenny Arts Festival

Abbey St.
Kilkenny.
Tel; 056 7763663
Web;
Office Manager: Valerie Ryan Email:
In regards to exhibiting during the Kilkenny Arts Festival and being officially part of their programme, i.e. having your exhibition published in the Kilkenny Arts Festival official brochure and website, you will have to contact the Festival directly to find out about their call for submissions procedures and deadlines.
Should you wish to exhibit outside of the Kilkenny Arts Festival official programme and be a part of the ‘Fringe’ event at the Festival the following information may be of assistance:
Kilkenny County Council Arts Office does not have exhibition space available at No. 76 or the Watergate Theatre, Upstairs Gallery, for the duration of the Festival. Our programmes for these spaces are confirmed up to a year in advance.
Kilkenny County Council Arts Office does not have a particular listing or database to assist artists in securing space for exhibiting during the Kilkenny Arts Festival as there isn’t a plethora of spaces available. Therefore each artists search is very much an independent search for securing exhibition space. In looking for space we advise the following:
Look to previous Kilkenny Arts Festival programmes to see what venues have been used in previous years. Assume then that these venues are approachable. These include but are not limited to: Butler House, Rothe House, Ormonde College of Art, Kilkenny Design Centre Restaurant, St. Mary’s Hall and McDonagh Junction Shopping Centre to name but a few.
Approach owners, auctioneers or empty shop fronts and spaces to see if they are available for use. These generally only become available at relatively short notice. Approach hotel, restaurants, pubs, business owners etc. that may have a suitable space.
Think outside of Kilkenny City. Towns and villages such as Callan, Thomastown, Castlecomer and Kells have all hosted strong exhibition programmes in previous years.
There are no laws / permits needed in regards to selling your work on the streets of Kilkenny City during the time of the Kilkenny Arts Festival however common sense is needed!
As the streets are narrow don’t block any footpaths, take over disabled parking spaces or private car parks. Ask permission of shop owners and businesses to set up sales outside their premises before doing so.
Should you wish to exhibit on the steps of City Hall you do need permission from the Borough Council so approach them directly.
A Food Market is held every Thursday on the Parade. It would not be appropriate to set up stall with them on the Thursday as they do pay a year long permit / fee to host their stalls.
Kilkenny: Temporary Signage Permit
A Temporary Signage Permit is needed to display signs advertising events / exhibitions around the county. (In particular please note for events / exhibitions held during the Kilkenny Arts Festival)
An application form and a map of where the signs will be displayed has to be sent to the relevant Area Office in the county. A licence number is allocated which must be displayed on all signage. Each sign costs €5 to display. On taking down the signs and fulfilling the conditions of display of the signs you get half of the final fee paid returned. There is no deadline for applications but the sooner your application is lodged before the event the better.
Please contact Kilkenny County Council, Reception, 056 77940000 and ask to be put in contact with your relevant Area Office to receive an application form. For example, events / exhibitions in Kells need to contact the Callan Area Office.
Note: Within the boundaries of the city Kilkenny Borough Council, Emir Slattery, Borough Council Engineer is the person to contact on 056 7794526
In regards to publicity and promotion during the Kilkenny Arts Festival a few options are open to you including:
Forwarding exhibition information to Niamh Finn, Arts Administrator, Kilkenny County Council Arts Office at for inclusion in the fortnightly e-bulletin which is circulated to a listing of 800 arts practitioners. The Arts Office can also display a poster of your exhibition and has an information desk at No. 76 so flyers can be left there for the public to browse and select.
A number of weeks before the Festival the Kilkenny People usually places a call in its press for ‘Fringe’ artists to forward exhibition information for inclusion in their press. This is something to keep track of.
You can also promote your own exhibition by printing posters and flyers and distributing these appropriately.
This information was collated in response to numerous requests from the public for information on exhibiting during the Kilkenny Arts Festival.
Regards,
Mary Butler
Arts Officer
