Texas History
2017-2018
Coach Basden
Course Goals:
- to highlight the major historical people and events of Texas, from natural Texas to contemporary Texas
- to create appreciation for the role Texas has played in the history of the United States of America
- to inspire a love for history and an appreciation for why it is important to study history
Materials:
You will need to come prepared for class everyday. This means you need to have the following items:
- something to write with (pen or pencil)
- something to write on (journal)
- iPad
Grade breakdown:
Grades will be broken down into three categories:
- Practice toward learning (includes classwork, homework, quizzes, etc.) - 30%
- Application toward learning (projects, interactive notebooks, etc.) - 30%
- Evaluation of learning (tests, summative assessments, etc.) - 40%
Class Decorum:
Proper class decorum is essential if all students are to have the opportunity to listen, think, ask questions, take notes and learn. In this class, appropriate class decorum means:
- Students should be attentive and active in taking notes, participating, etc.
- Talking while someone else talks is unacceptable.
- There will be no cell phones used in the classroom.
Homework:
Homework will be due at the beginning of the class period unless specified otherwise. Per district policy, the teacher is not required to accept late work more than two days after the due date. Late work will receive a deduction of 30% if not turned in on time.
Make-up Work:
You will be responsible for work missed due to an absence. Three days plus the number of days missed is the usual time allowed for make-up work.
Re-tests:
You will receive an opportunity to re-test if you earn a grade below 70% in the evaluation category (excluding evaluation grades received on projects/assignments that extend over a period of 5 days). In order for re-evaluation to occur, the student will participate in the re-teaching process as determined by the teacher. The re-evaluation score will replace the original score with a maximum grade of 70%.
Communication:
If and when you have questions or problems, communicate with me. Earlier is always better. Do not let questions go unanswered or problems go unresolved. I may not have the right answer or best solution, but I can’t help you if you don’t communicate.
