Type of module / Intensive six week clinical education block.
Aims /
  1. To enable students to apply the knowledge, skills and attitudes gained on their previous clinical placements and during their university modules in the examination, assessment, treatment /management and evaluation of patients/clients with problems related to core or speciality areas of practice.
  2. To enable students to relate and adapt to a variety of situations within the practice setting.
  3. To enable students to develop the necessary interpersonal skills in the adoption
  4. To enable students to integrate with other members of the therapeutic /multidisciplinary team.
  5. To enable students to reflect on and evaluate their practice in the light of experience and advice of a holistic approach to patient/client management.

Learning outcomes/objectives / On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
  • Communicate effectively with patients/ clients, relatives, carers and members of the health and social care team.
  • Develop a therapeutic relationship demonstrating sensitivity to the needs of others , taking into account physical, psychosocial and cultural needs in all situations.
  • Demonstrates non-discriminatory practice.
  • Fulfill all responsibilities related to legal and ethical aspects of professional practice including clinical information.
  • Contribute effectively to work undertaken as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Justify appropriate physiotherapy assessment strategies to complete a holistic process of enquiry.
  • Interpret findings from assessment in order to identify the individuals strengths and problems and a physiotherapy diagnosis.
  • Develop specific safe and effective treatment plans with patients/ clients and or carers as appropriate adopting a holistic approach.
  • Select appropriate measures to evaluate the outcome of physiotherapy interventions.
  • Demonstrate their ability to give effective health care advice.
  • Effectively manage a caseload with increasing autonomy and accountability, prioritising their workload and managing time effectively.
  • Demonstrate evidence of clinical reasoning throughout documentation.
  • Apply appropriate assessment and treatment strategies, safely and effectively.
  • Establish and maintain a safe practice environment considering all risks.

Content / 6 weeks clinical practice experience in a practice setting. Integration of knowledge , skills and attitudes specific to the core areas of practice (musculo-skeletal, cardio-respiratory and neurology)or speciality areas of practice.
Teaching and learning strategies / Experiential learning facilitated by clinical educator/s.
Individual and group tutorials in the practice setting from clinical educators and other multidisciplinary team members.
Individual tutorial/s with visiting academic tutor.
Other teaching and learning strategies may include : Role play, case scenarios, problem based learning, structured observation, demonstration, case presentations, video analysis.
Learning support / Introductory workshops and structured debriefing sessions following practice based experience. Peer support in the university and practice setting. Support from clinical educators and visiting tutors.
Learning resources on clinical sites and in the university setting.
Clinical education handbook.
Assessment tasks / Continuous assessment of the student will be made by the clinical educator who will monitor the student’s progress during the placement through questioning, observation of practice and discussion of clinical reasoning. Feedback will also be received from other team members.
Appropriate guidance regarding the assessment process will be provided by the visiting tutor.
The student will be assessed in four areas of clinical practice using formal assessment criteria which are applied in relation to the learning outcomes. Safe practice and professional behaviour in accordance to the Rules of Professional Conduct must be maintained throughout the placement; these two areas are assessed on a pass/fail basis.
Brief description of module content and/or aims (maximum 80 words) / This module focuses on the development of the student’s knowledge, skills and attitudes in the practice setting. During the course of the module the student is in direct contact with patients and develops their ability to solve problems and evaluate their treatment/management programmes to meet the needs of individual patients/clients. Students in year three of the course will be required to reflect on and evaluate their practice and to manage an appropriate caseload with increasing autonomy and accountability.
