Other / This is an accelerated programme so modules sit outside the traditional university timings. This module will run in their 1st year on the course.
Brief description of module content and/ or aims
Overview (max 80 words) / This module focuses on the development of the student’s knowledge, skills and attitudes in the practice setting. During the module the student is in direct contact with service users, observing and partaking in professional practice, working as part of the interprofessional team and starting to develop their ability to problem solve and evaluate the treatment/management programmes they are part of to meet the needs of individual service users. This will enable the student to integrate this practice experience into the subsequent modules of their problem based learning course.

MODULE AIMS, ASSESSMENT AND SUPPORT
Aims /
  • To enable students to apply the knowledge, fundamental skills and attitudes gained on their first two campus based modules in assessment and treatment /management in a variety of practice settings
  • To enable students to observe and reflect on health professionals adapting to a variety of situations within different practice settings.
  • To enable students to develop their interpersonal skills in the holistic management of service users.
  • To enable students to integrate with other members of the therapeutic /interprofessional team
  • To enable students to reflect on and evaluate their practice in the light of experience and advice

Learning outcomes / On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
  1. Engage, show interest and demonstrate initiative in team working
  2. Seekguided and independent learning opportunities in the context of the placement
  3. Integrate basic principles of communication with staff, patients and relevant others and reflect and take actions on feedback.
  4. Appreciateand apply ethical and professional codes of conduct and their scope of practice within inter-professional working.
  5. Interact with patients, their carers and others in caring and compassionate manner, demonstrating respect, dignity, confidentiality for the patient's persona
  6. Engage in the treatment and management of patients in collaboration and under guidance of members of MDT in the context and boundaries of their own abilities observing safe practice

Content / 6 weeks practical experience in a practice setting.
Integration of knowledge, skills and attitudes specific to the area of practice.
Learning support / Practice based education handbook. Introductory workshops and structured debriefing sessions following practice based experience. Student Central. Peer support in the university and practice setting. Support from Practice educators and visiting tutors. Learning resources relating to practice sites.
Teaching and learning activities
Details of teaching and learning activities / Intensive six week practice placement block where students will integrate their knowledge, fundamental skills and professionalism to the area of practice working with their peers and members of MDT as appropriate. This will be facilitated by the practice educator using a number of different strategies outlined above.

SCHEDULED / This is an indication of the number of hours students can expect to spend in scheduled teaching activities including lectures, seminars, tutorials, project supervision, demonstrations, practical classes and workshops, supervised time in workshops/ studios, fieldwork, external visits, and work-based learning.
GUIDED INDEPENDENT STUDY / All students are expected to undertake guided independent study which includes wider reading/ practice, follow-up work, the completion of assessment tasks, and revisions.
PLACEMENT / The placement is a specific type of learning away from the University that is not work-based learning or a year abroad. / 200

Assessment tasks
Details of assessment for this module / Reflective portfolio
This will include: Formative: Selection of formative reflective statements relating to communication, professional practice, assessment, treatment/management supported by peer, tutor and practice educators. This will be discussed with their peers and practice educator on placement and with their personal tutor on return to University.
Summative:
Part 1. A written reflectiveessay of a critical incident from their practice. (equivalent to 2000 words)(Assessed at level 7)

Part 2. Practice; Continuous assessment of the students’ practice by the practice educator during the placement (Assessed at level 6) ; e.g.
LO1, LO2, LO4, LO5,LO6

Appropriate guidance regarding the assessment process will be provided by the visiting tutor.
Student must pass both parts (1 and 2) for the successful completion of module.
