SUBJ: Beckman Coulter Senior High Science Educator Award

The Dade County Science Teachers’ Association announces the opening of nominations for the 2011 Beckman Coulter Senior High Educator Award. This $2500 scholarship award is designed to sponsor professional development in the life sciences, including microbiology, molecular biology, and chemistry for Grades 9-12 biology, chemistry, or integrated science teacher.

The Beckman Coulter Corporation will judge and announce the winner at the Dade County Science Teachers’ Association Annual Teacher of the Year Banquet on May 13th 2011 at the Courtyard Miami Coconut Grove in Coconut Grove, 2649 South Bayshore Drive. All nominees must attend the Banquet.

BECKMAN COULTER SCIENCE EDUCATOR AWARD

A Science-Tools-for-Schools’ sponsorship for professional development

Award: Award: To sponsor a qualified and motivated high school teacher for professional development in the life sciences, including microbiology, molecular biology and chemistry. The recipient acquires the knowledge, materials and resources that help the teacher introduce students to cutting-edge scientific fields not previously taught in school.

Criteria: Awarded to a senior high school teacher who is a DCSTA member and:

·  teaches 9-12 grade biology, chemistry or integrated science;

·  demonstrates leadership qualities, such as public speaking, presents workshops at local, state or national conference;

·  has conducted at least one in-service for colleagues;

·  submits two nominations – one from the school administrator and one from a colleague.

The science educator sponsorship is earned through a selection process, and awarded to a qualified high school science teacher in the local Beckman Coulter community

Upon completion of the “Keys to Science Institute,” participants are asked to use the curriculum with students and to conduct at least one in-service training session with their colleagues. Participants must have the support of their school administrator to attend “Keys to Science” and to implement the above in the following year.
