2011 Presidents Report

I am very pleased to report on the progress of our club during the 2011 season, and just as importantly, highlight a strategic plan for 2012 that I believe will take us one step closer to achieving the vision I have for our club:

“The Coniston Junior Soccer Club is the club of choice

for all young players

in the Coniston, Mount St Thomas, and South Wollongong area”

Our club fielded 151 players over 16 teams from U6 to U13. It is pleasing to see our registrations rise, which is complimented with the increase in skill level as a result of our focus on quality coaching and skill development at the earliest opportunity.

Of the 4 graded teams we fielded, our U10’s won the grand final, and our U12’s were semi finalists. This is a great achievement for our club, as this was our first grand final win since 2006.

It must be noted that our coaches, managers, and volunteers are the backbone of our club as without them, there would be no junior soccer. Thanks to them, our club has performed strongly and we have a great club culture of fun and participation. These important people give their time so willingly and are excellent role models for our next generation.

It is just as important to recognise the dedication and commitment of our management committee. We all began this year new to our roles, we didn’t know what to expect, and we set ourselves some high expectations. In hindsight, we have exceeded our expectations on so many fronts. Thanks to such a wonderful team and congratulations on a very successful year.

We are also grateful to our sponsors. Our sponsors make a significant contribution to the operational capability of our club, as registrations alone do not cover our operating costs, let alone our new initiatives.

Notable achievements in the 2011 season have been:

  • Growth of 219% in the use of our club website
  • The erection of our new ‘cyclone rated’ awning
  • The refurbishment of our canteen, players room, and office
  • The erection of our new sports field light pole
  • The introduction of TSA Football Schools to train our players
  • The purchase of new Adidas club player shirts
  • The purchase of new training balls and equipment
  • The introduction of club merchandise (jackets, polos, etc.)
  • Affiliation with the national ‘Good Sports’ program
  • Team photos introduced for the first time since 1999
  • Beginning to strengthen our ties with the Coniston Lions senior club
  • Holding our inaugural ‘Appreciation Day’ for our sponsors
  • Finishing with our fun-filled Presentation Day and parents match

As we move into the 2012 season, our strategic plan is to:

  • Grow our player numbers through retention, marketing, and positive word-of-mouth, all of which is built on strong credibility and high integrity
  • Have a strong focus on coach and player development through increased coaching courses and academy training for our players
  • Continue to attract more sponsors to fund our player development and costs associated with increased registrations
  • Apply for government grants to build our infrastructure

I strongly believe that if we focus on executing the abovementioned strategy, we will set our club up to make strong progress towards our vision.

The 2012 season promises to better this year, with a solid foundation created through investment into our club facilities, supported by a more experienced management committee which remain focused on continuously improving the club’s performance both on and off the field.

Final thanks go to all parents, players and supporters for continuing to support their club through 2011. We look forward to seeing you all again next year.

In particular, I look forward to welcoming new committee members so that they can help influence their children’s development and bring diversity to improving how the club operates and the services we provide our local community.

John Karayiannis

Small-Sided Games

In 2012 age groups Under 6, Under 7, Under 8, Under 9 AND Under 10 (born in 2002 or later) will be playing the Small-Sided Game format. Under 6 & 7 teams play 4 players per side, the Under 8 & 9 teams play 7 players per side (including goalkeeper), while the Under 10 teams play 9 players per side (including goalkeeper).

More details and rules of small-sided games be found on the club’s website including brochures published by Football Australia. Small Sided Games use simplified rules, smaller numbers of players and smaller fields to give players greater opportunity to participate in the game, develop their skills and have fun.

Graded Teams

Children from Under 11 to Under 18 are graded into competition divisions by the district to ensure they are playing in a team and against teams appropriate to their ability. Grading is an association requirement. Graded teams play on a full size field with all the rules of soccer as set down by FIFA. New players are always welcome.

Trials and Meet the Coaches and Managers Days

To organise our teams with correct numbers, it is compulsory that all players and at least one parent attend their meet the coaches and managers days.

The process will be as follows:

  1. A coach and team manager must be selected for each team.
  1. The coach’s and team manager’s child gains automatic entry into their team.
  1. The remaining team positions will be filled by the players that attend. You may choose as a parent and player which team to join, but be mindful that teams must have an even number of players.
  1. Any request to play up an age group will be considered, with decisions based only on numbers registered in each age group. Contact John (coaching coordinator) prior to your meet the coach/manager day if you wish to play your child up an age group. Decisions will be finalised after 14th February.

Training

Your coach is responsible for organising team training, and either the coach or manager will advise players if training is changed or cancelled.

Training times are usually from 4:00pm onwards – your coach will advise you of your training day and time.

It is compulsory for parents to be in attendance at training sessions for players in U6, U7, U8, U9 and U10 teams for safety and personal reasons. If a parent or nominated adult is unable to remain at training, the child will be unable to train.

Uniform

The player’s uniform consists of:

  • Football boots and shin pads
  • Coniston club shorts (black with a little gold)
  • Coniston club socks
  • Coniston club shirts (gold with black trim)

Players must provide their own shorts and socks. These can be purchased from the Canteen at registration day or during the season. Details of sizes available and costs can be found on the club website. PLAYER'S SHIRTS are supplied by the club and kept in a kit supplied to the Team Manager at the beginning of the season. Shirts are valuable club property and are ONLY to be worn during the games.

Boots are required for all players, as they prevent sprains and strains, especially when the field is wet. This year, we are asking all parents to donate unwanted boots and shin pads to the club, which will be used for future players FOR FREE.

Shin pads are COMPULSORY for ALL ages for games and training.

V.I.P (volunteer, inspire, participate) Program

To ensure that your child enjoys their time with the club all parents are asked to assist as much as possible. Club Officials, Coaches and Managers have a lot to do and your assistance will help make the club’s operations run much smoother and be more enjoyable for everyone. You can assist in the following ways:

 Staffing the Canteen

 Coaching or managing a team

 Join the committee

 Helping set up and take down nets at home games – the first and last teams to play are responsible for this.

 Ensuring your child is on time for matches – the coach or manager will advise how long before match time you are required at the field.

 Informing Coach/manager if your child is unable to play or attend training

 Washing shirts when required

 Being prompt when picking your child up after training (Note: Parents must remain at training for players in U/6 to U/10)

I’m interested in becoming a coach or manager. What do I do?

Approach any member of our committee and let us know. Committee contacts can be found below, or our website > Contact Us > Club Contacts

If you have any additional questions about becoming a coach, assistant coach, or team manager, please do not hesitate to contact the coaching coordinator John on 0412 632 662. Thank you and we look forward to another great season!
