TITLEOFINSTRUCTOR POSITION: Clinical Learning Lab Specialist

PLEASE PROVIDE A SUMMARYANDRATIONALEOFFACULTY POSITION REQUEST(Youmaycopyand pastefromyour COMPREHENSIVE OR ANNUAL PROGRAM REVIEW.)

Substantiate recommendationswithdataandtheguidelineslisted intheBudgetDecisionCriteriaand

College StrategicGoalsdocuments.

This is listed as a new position because the faculty position was not replaced during the 2014/15 academic year. During our September 2014 Continuing Approval visit, the recommendation by the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) was that the Program have a FT positionfor the Simulation Lab. Similar to ACCJC recommendations, BRN recommendations are essentially a statement, requiring action. Therefore, in response to the recommendation and in order to maintain compliance with the Board of Registered Nursing rules and regulations, this position must be replaced. The replacement faculty member must also meet the Board’s requirements for instructor. The unit priority is to provide the level of staffing as it existed in 2013/2014 which included a full time faculty member for the Simulation Lab.

The Clinical Learning Lab Specialist is responsible for the development of scenario based instruction and integration of simulation into the Nursing/Allied Health programs; providing faculty development with the use of simulation; simulation practice for students; evaluation of simulation strategies; and overseeing the operations of the simulation lab. Thisis an instructional position that has primary responsibility to organize the learning experiences that take place in the clinical simulation laboratory as well as to collaborate with nursing/allied health faculty who are teaching courses that require practice in the simulated clinical laboratory.

•Program and Service sustainability- The RN Program meets the community need for nurses, thereby providing sustainable service to the community.

Alignment with College Strategic Goals

  • Student Success

Being able to maintain the best practice of early identification of the at risk student along with providing simulatedlearning experiences supports the Programs’ PLO’s, Course SLO’s,and facilitates student success.

INTERNAL REVIEW OF POSITION

  1. Explain why the work cannot be reassigned to other staff within the department

This position was previously held by a full-time faculty member who resigned in June of 2014 and was not replaced for the 14/15 academic year. Currently, we have full time faculty (as overload) and adjunct faculty assigned to components of this job. However, the lack of coordination and availability of faculty to offer simulation experiences, has led to studentsstating that they are not able to access the lab services. Students, who have been referred to the simulation/skills lab as part of the department success program, are not able to meet the requirements as stated in their remediation plan. This will affect completion rates, course SLO’s, and PLO’sas these students are in danger of not passing their courses.

  1. Impact on College/District if position is not filled

This position is directly related to student support/access and success. This position is responsible for the tasks of scheduling student appointments; assisting students will skills, and conducting simulation scenarios. Without the ability to offer these services to students, the result of students not being able to access activities will decrease program outcomes.Failure to fulfill the request will result in a change to the Program’s organization and as such becomes an area of non-compliance with the regulations and recommendation. This would negatively impact the Program’s approval status (accreditation) with the Board of Registered Nursing.

  1. Is a temporary employee currently performing the work of this position?

 Yesx No

  1. New position: How is the work assigned to this position presently accomplished?

The work is currently being accomplished by faculty overload and with multiple adjunct faculty members.
