“Biology Boot Camp” Online Tutorial project

Module 2: Information Literacy

Mid-Grant:

Throughout the weeks of March 2 – June 10, 2010, the following work was completed in support of the Biology Bootcamp Information Literacy Module:

·  Surveyed Biology Faculty on their inclusion of information literacy concepts in the various courses offered by their department.

·  Consulted with campus Instructional Designers in order to assure the creation of a user-friendly and content rich tutorial.

·  Created Student Information Literacy Skill Surveys/Assessments.

·  Delivered pre and post assessments to over 200 Biology students during the Spring 2010 term.

·  Analyzed the results of the faculty surveys and student assessments.

·  Learned how to use Lesson Builder and Presenter.

·  Created Template for Lesson Builder modules that is aesthetically pleasing and similar is style to other modules in the Biology Bootcamp.

·  Created content for module 1, 2, and 6.

·  Revised modules as necessary.

·  Wrote necessary reports.

·  Kelly – 94 hours; Breanna – 68 hours; Robin – 2 hours

Final Report:

Throughout the weeks of August 9 – October 25, the following work was completed in support of the Biology Bootcamp Information Literacy Module:

·  Created content for Module 3 (3 part section), including the creation of videos, transcripts and quiz poppers.

·  Cleaned up Lesson Builder files to make pages more succinct and improve flow of content.

·  Tested tutorial in 2 sections of BIO205 and 5 sections of BIO181.

·  Upgraded to Lesson Builder 6 and Jing upgrade.

·  Revised pre-assessment, post-assessment after tutorial and post test after completion of information literacy class assignment.

·  Created all quizzes and activities for Modules 3,4 and 5.

·  Explored options for entering pre and post tests into Lesson Builder and Blackboard, as well as alternative means for entering videos.

·  Presented on progress on the grant to the Title V Committee.

·  Wrote final report.

·  Kelly- 42.5 hours; Breanna - 32 hours; Robin – 8 hours (in truth, we all well exceeded these hours)

Future Plans for Next Phase of the Grant:

·  Complete Modules 4 and 5.

·  Make all Biology Bootcamp Modules (information literacy, study skills, technical writing) uniform in layout, color scheme, testing options, etc.

·  Create and analyze student surveys on what they liked and what they did not like on the tutorials. Make improvements based on this data/

·  Share tutorials with other librarians and biology instructors to get their feedback on the content. Make improvements based on this data.

·  Explore different option than Google forms and embedding videos into Lesson Builder – not pleased with the software.

·  Review student scores on pre and post assessments from Fall 2010.

·  Explore usage of content in other STEM courses.
