BACKGROUND

Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education (Batchelor Institute) and Tiwi Islands Training and Employment Board (TITEB) have partnered to establish a more efficient and effective learning environment for people in the Tiwi Islands. This program will be piloted over six months and the initial success of the program may lead to further funding being approved to continue the program.

OVERVIEW

This position is responsible for the development of educational partnerships between; Batchelor Institute, Schools, local employers, Government and non-government departments/agencies, CDEP, Aboriginal organisations and community members on the Tiwi Islands. It providesa support service which relatesto the implementation and utilisation of both Vocational Education Training and Higher Education programs offered by Batchelor Institute and TITEB on the Tiwi Islands.

The Training Coordinator will:

-Work closely with Batchelor Institute and TITEB staff for effective communication and reporting responsibilities;

-Manage and coordinate culturally appropriate teaching and learning activities which includes career expos;

-Monitor student learning outcomes in accordance with the Institute curriculum guidelines, standards and conditions and will comply with the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) framework; and

-Be required to travel to all Tiwi Islands communities as required to explore and document potential education and training opportunities with the intention to design and implement a training plan which includes both formal and informal education and training.

KEY ROLE PROFILE OUTCOMES

  1. Undertake recruitment by identification of students, provide referrals to appropriate courses offered by Batchelor Institute and together with relevant staff maintain student records, monitor student progress and recommend appropriate action and produce comprehensive reports after each training event.
  1. Provide advice to students on all educational and training enquiries (e.g.: student travel, units of competency) according to the Institute’s Assessment Rules, Faculty of Health, Business and Science and ASQA quality standards.
  1. Liaise with relevant Batchelor Institute staff, assist in the development of VET training courses for delivery in styles appropriate to the client group, and participate in curriculum reviews and moderation of assessments.
  1. Coordinate and conduct Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110) workshops including access to appropriate teaching and resource materials for delivery.
  1. Undertake research and other professional development activities and attend team, Faculty and Institute meetings as required.
  1. Develop and maintain close working relationships with all relevant industry stakeholders including exploration and reporting of possible joint delivery opportunities, incorporating community priorities into training plans in consultation with Batchelor Institute and TITEB.
  1. Other duties within the range of skills normally associated with this designation as directed.

SELECTION COMPETENCIES

Key selection competencies:

  1. A tertiary qualification equivalent to four (4) year’s higher education in any of the following academic discipline fields; Community Development / Educational Management and Adult Education, and/orsubstantial experience relevant to the position.
  1. Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAA40104 or TAE40110) or a willingness to obtain the qualification within 6 months.
  1. Demonstrated understanding of the VET system, VET delivery and how to broker training courses from Registered Training Organisations (RTO’s).
  1. Demonstrated capacity to work effectively within the social, political and cultural environments of indigenous Australian communities and organisations and communicate sensitively and effectively with indigenous Australians, including adult students and community members, and work effectively within culturally diverse teams.
  1. Demonstrated capacity to respond effectively to the learning needs of adult indigenous Australian students enrolled in courses, with good organizational, co-ordination and time management skills to undertake a range of administrative, supervisory and liaison tasks including computer technology and electronic communications.
  1. Demonstrated ability to consult and counsel students on their academic progress and recommend appropriate action.
  1. Must be able to undertake travel throughout the Northern Territory in a light aircraft, must possess a Northern Territory ‘C’ class drivers licence with experience of driving on unformed roads, and must be prepared to stay in a range of accommodation available to the Batchelor Institute staff, including camping out.
  1. Demonstrated capacity to undertake research and other professional development activities and a demonstrated understanding of equal opportunity, affirmative action and quality assurance (ASQA) principles and practices.

Special features of position:

  • This position is being funded for a 6 month period as a trial where BIITE and TITEB are seeking to enhance the Education and Training opportunities throughout the Tiwi Islands. The project is designed to support training, employment and career pathways for Aboriginal people in the Tiwi Island communities and at the same time it will promote stronger working relationships between all Education and Training stakeholders who provide support to the Tiwi Island communities educationally.
