Position: Dr. Susan Wessler, Distinguished Professor, is seeking an M.S. level scientist to help coordinate teaching and outreach activities for the Dynamic Genome Teaching Program at the University of California, Riverside.

Title/Rank: Academic Coordinator I, Step 1 (12-month).

Location: Neil A. Campbell Science Learning Laboratory at the University of California, Riverside.

Background: The successful candidate will join the innovative and growing Dynamic Genome teaching program that introduces students to the scientific process through authentic research experiences. Students are taught key biological concepts along with widely used molecular biology and bioinformatics techniques. The Program also conducts extensive outreach events on and off campus. The majority of the activities take place in the newly renovated and well-equipped 3,600 sq. ft. Neil A. Campbell Science Learning Laboratory located in the University Laboratory Building.

Qualifications: Applicants must have an M.S. degree or higher from a recognized university in a biological science. The successful candidate will have at least two years of experience working in an undergraduate teaching laboratory including overseeing day-to-day preparations. The candidate will have considerable experience in lecture and laboratory instruction. Significant molecular biology skills including pipetting, PCR design and set-up, gel electrophoresis, DNA sequencing, and DNA/RNA extractions are required. Skills in basic bioinformatics are required including PubMed literature searches, BLAST analysis, multiple sequence alignment, and genome browser use. The candidate will be passionate about teaching and mentoring undergraduates and be willing to implement the latest teaching techniques and technologies. Ideally the candidate will be familiar with courses offered to biology undergraduates and be sensitive to the ethnic diversity found on the UCR campus.

Responsibilities: The Academic Coordinator will work with Dr. Susan Wessler and Dr. James Burnette to expand the Dynamic Genome Program by directing multiple sections of the course each quarter. The candidate will help and will work with other professors to develop and test new sections. The candidate will work directly with the laboratory technician to order and prepare all necessary materials and reagents needed for all sections of the course. In addition, the incumbent will coordinate and conduct outreach activities and oversee the Dynamic Genome Outreach Student Group.
