Title: Psychoneuroimmunology and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Food as a natural medication

I. Introduction

A. Define ADHD and a vegan diet

B. Thesis: A vegan diet might have merit as a possible effect of lessening stress and focusing of attention for children diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), thus decreasing the symptoms of ADHD.

II. Subtopic 1: The vegan diet reduces internal stress allowing us to function at an optimum level.

A. Point/Example: lower blood sugar levels (reference point: link to ADD)

B. Point/Example: balances out needed body chemicals (such as 5-HT and DA; link these chemicals with agitation). (reference point: link balanced diet to lower stress levels).

III. Subtopic 2: The reduction of internal stress leads to a higher resistance to external stress allowing us to better deal with stressful situations.

A. Point/Example: cite prison study of food and calming effect on inmates

B. Point/Example: chart increased agitation in schools and correlate with lowering of food standards (i.e. more soft drink/junk food vending machines, cafeteria junk food)
