Title: Olympic Medals and Graph

Objectives:

1. The students will research the Olympic medal count by countries on a specified Internet site.

2. The students will create a spreadsheet which displays the gathered data.

3. The students will create a graph to illustrate their findings.

Timeline: one to two 45 minute class periods

Procedures:

Before Coming to the Computer Lab

1. Download and make student copies of the Olympic Medal Count Sheet.

2. FIND A CURRENT INTERNET MEDAL SITE and have the computer lab assistant place a shortcut on the desktop or the Internet Link toolbar.

In the Computer Lab

Researching Information on the Internet

1. Open the Internet and click on the Olympic Medal link.

2. Write down the top three countries and the number of medals each earned on the Olympic Medal Count Sheet.

3. Close the Internet.

Getting Started in Microsoft Excel

1. Go to Start > Programs > Microsoft Excel.

2. Go to File and choose Save As.

3. In the Save in box, click the down arrow and navigate to the desired location.

4. In the File name box, type the student’s name and click Save.

5. Show and explain to the students the parts of the spreadsheet -- row, column and cell.

Entering Information

1. Click into cell A1 and type the student’s name.

2. Type the following in the respective cells:
Cell A2 -- Country
Cell B2 -- Gold
Cell C2 -- Silver
Cell D2 -- Bronze

3. Go to File > Save.

4. Type the country names and the medal numbers into the appropriate cells.

5. Auto fit each column by moving the mouse to the line in between the Column letters and double clicking (pizza, pizza). Each column should automatically adjust to the largest item in the column.

6. Highlight cells A2, B2, C2 and D2.

7. Click the Bold button on the top toolbar.

8. Click the Center button on the top toolbar.

9. Go to File > Save.

Creating Charts

1. Click in cell A2.

2. Hold the Shift key down and click in cell D5. Cells should now be highlighted.

3. Click the Chart Wizard button in the top toolbar.

4. In Step 1, make sure Column is selected and click the Next button.

5. On Step 2, click the Next button.

6. In Step 3, click into the Chart title box and type Medal Count.

7. Click Next.

8. In Step 4, click Finish.

9. Go to File > Save.

Moving the Chart

1. Click and hold on a white area of the chart and drag the chart under the information in the spreadsheet.

2. Go to File > Save.

Printing the Spreadsheet and Chart

1. Click in a blank cell of the spreadsheet.

2. Go to File > Print.

3. In the Printer Name box, click the down arrow and change the printer to the Color printer.

4. Click OK.

Have students make observations about which countries earned the most medals and theorize reasons why that occurred.
Have students change chart attributes (font type, font size, series color, etc.)
