By: Byron Zinselmeir, MA ATC
Primary Subject: Athletic Training / Sports Medicine
Secondary Subject: English, Computers, and Internet
Grade Level: 10-12
Concept / Topic to Teach:
Digestive System Anatomy and Physiology Application
Goals:
Students will apply the information gained through the readings and lecture/discussions. They will show progress by writing an informational essay, and taking a test on the material.
Required Materials:
Computer lab big enough for an entire class. Booked for two or three days.
Anticipatory Set (Lead In):
Students should have read through the ‘Digestive System Reading’ packet and can use it while writing their essay.
Students will be reminded of where we have been and how that information is directly relevant to the writing assignment.
Step by Step Procedures:
Day 1- Explain the Digestive System Essay and have students work to produce a rough draft before the end of the period. They are to take the rough draft home and revise by writing on the rough draft.
Day 2/3- Student will continue and finish their Digestive System Essay and hand it in complete with the rough draft at the end of the period or the next morning.
Day 3/4 – Test review with all available materials (power point, worksheets, readings, etc) I like to perform a comprehensive review of the material stopping and allowing student to ask for clarification or further information.
Day 4/5 – Take the test, and after the test hand out the reading “The Scoop on Poop”. The reading is factual, but written in a fun and humorous manner.
Plan for independent work:
Digestive System Reading Packet
Revision of Digestive System Essay after first draft.
Closure / Transition
Talk about the difference between digestive system anatomy and physiology (where we have been), and the actual nutrition needed to drive the body’s energy needs (where we are going)
Assessment:
Completion of worksheets, Digestion Essay, and written test.
Connections to other Subjects:
English – writing a grammatically and factual paper
Computers- Essay must be word processed
