Introduction: The purpose of this lesson plan is to teach students who are at the high school level about Eating Disorders and having a healthy relationship with food. These two concepts closely linked, and are important for students to understand to better their own lifestyles. Incorporating the Acquisition learning domain and technology will help students to understand the material. No pre-requisites are required. The time required is one class period.
Group Size: The Whole Class
Learning Objectives: After completing this lesson, students will create an advertisement, using PhotoShop and aimed at an age group of their choice, to satisfy rubric requirements that demonstrate their interpretation of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and relationship with food.
Guiding Questions: What do you think an advertisement created using PhotoShop about maintaining a healthy lifestyle would look?
Materials: The materials needed for this lesson plan are computers for each student in the class and a projector to display prezi presentations.
Procedures: Steps of the lesson plan:
1. Play an engaging youtube clip of what an Eating Disorder looks like. A good clip is from the television series “TrueLife” from MTV about Eating Disorders.
2. Open a Prezi Presentation about Eating Disorders
a. What is an Eating Disorder? What are the different types of Eating Disorders? What are risk factors of an Eating Disorder? What are warning signs?
3. After, I will explain the lesson project.
a. Have students conduct their own research on maintaining a healthy lifestyle (Acquisition learning).
b. Students who were already previously taught about how to use PhotoShop will create an ad in PhotoShop about maintaining a healthy lifestyle that is aimed towards high school students.
c. Link to a website that will aid in students in PhotoShop tutorials.
4. The students will spend the rest of the class conducting their own research (Acquisition learning) and creating their ad.
5. Students will then present their ad. They will explain what maintaining a healthy lifestyle means to them (Acquisition learning), what the parts of maintaining a healthy lifestyle are in their opinion (acquisition learning), the meaning of their ad (acquisition learning), and what age group the ad is aimed at (acquisition learning)
Assessment: In order to assess what the students learn, during the second class period, the students will receive an assignment. The assignment will involve creating an advertisement in PhotoShop. The students can include whatever they want in the ad, it just has to pertain to their own opinion and research on healthy eating. During the third class the students will present their ad to the class.
Answer Key/Rubric: The rubric (out of 100 points) for the healthy lifestyle ad will be as follows: Informative content/parts of maintaining a healthy lifestyle- 25 pts., what maintaining a healthy lifestyle means to the student- 25 pts., the meaning behind their ad- 20 pts., what age group the ad is aimed at and why- 10 pts., creativity (images, captivating appearance, etc.)- 20 pts.
