Tips for job seekers

Once you have an idea of the type of job you want in tourism, and once you have completed any required training, it’s time to land that coveted job. This requires a methodical plan: write a résumé that highlights your key skills, prepare for difficult interview questions, target companies you're going to contact directly, and prepare with the latest techniques for marketing yourself and networking effectively.

Preparing your résumé and cover letter

One of your first steps should be to prepare an up-to-date résumé that highlights your training, work experience, additional language skills and volunteer activities. Attention to detail is important to all employers, so ensure that your cover letter and résumé are free of spelling and grammatical errors.A cover letter should be no more than one page – preferably bullet points or short paragraphs. You should customize it for each job application.

Learn about your potential employers

Are there people in your community or circle of acquaintances who are doing the type of work that interests you? Contact them to find out what skills and experience they think you'll need. Read through job descriptions on job-search websites. From your research, develop a list of companies you want to work for, then contact the companies directly regarding current or future job opportunities.

Use your network

Not all jobs are advertised. Many positions are filled by people who have been recommended by someone they know. Be sure to tell friends, relatives and neighbors that you are looking for a tourism job; they may know somebody who is hiring or who can help get you started.

Become a volunteer

Volunteering helps you meet people in the tourism industry and build experience, which is especially important for job seekers who are just starting out in the workforce. Some employers hire volunteers to help during the busy season, and many event organizers offer volunteer opportunities

Be flexible

Generally, tourism is an industry that operates around the clock and experiences high and low seasons. Be flexible and expect to work shifts outside of a typical work week. Plan to be available on evenings and weekends, especially when you are starting out.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve

Known as one of the most diverse wildlife refuges in the world, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is one of the most visited areas in Costa Rica. The ranges of animals that call Monteverde home include over 100 mammalian species, 400 species of birds and thousands of insect species. The plant kingdom is also well represented, featuring 2,500 species, 420 of which are orchid variations.

Ecotourism is strong in the Monteverde area, so you will find organizations and guides who are first and foremost interested in educating and preserving their beautiful wonderland. The reserve is a non-profit organization that is run by the Tropical Science Center. Activities offered in and around Monteverde include hikes, horseback rides, canopy tours and thrilling zip line experiences.

Costa Rica's Arenal Volcano National Park

Arenal Volcano erupted in 1968 and has been active since then. Arenal is today, the most active volcano in the country. A number of Costa Rica hotels in the area are situated so as to provide magnificent views of the volcano.
Rainforest and cloud forest cover most of Arenal Volcano National Park, offering fantastic flora and fauna examples, some of which are seen nowhere else on Earth. There are a number of marked hiking trails that wind through the park and lead to lookout spots and different points of interest. Near the volcano there is a visitor center where restrooms, a souvenir store, an auditorium and an exhibition hall can be found.
Tortuguero National Park

Only reachable by boat or airplane, Tortuguero National Park is still one of the most visited parks in Costa Rica. The village of Tortuguero is the starting point for visitors who wish to visit the park. Here, you will find lodging and food, along with the tour operating companies that will help you with your arrangements to see the park. Even lone travelers should consider entering the park with a group tour since the arrangements necessary for entrance can be rather complicated.

The main reason for visiting Tortuguero National Park is the turtles. Hawksbill, leatherback and Green Sea turtles nest and lay their eggs on the beaches in the area. The majority of egg laying happens at night, and since the park closes at 6:00 p.m., you will have to arrange a night visit with a tour guide in order to experience this unforgettable phenomenon.

Legible London

Walking is a great way of getting around London.

Legible London is a system of street signs and maps designed to make London that little bit easier to walk around.

As well as being free, healthy and environmentally friendly, it can also save you time - 109 journeys between neighbouring central London Underground stations are actually quicker on foot than the Tube! It means that, for shorter journeys, you can swap your usual route for a healthy, and often quicker, walk instead.

Yet many people are put off by inconsistent signage and confusion about distances between areas.

We've developed Legible London to tackle these issues and help bothresidents and visitors walk to their destination quickly and easily.

Our maps give you useful information about the local area, with realistic times it might take you to walk to places in a five and fifteen minute range.

These and our signposts are easy to spot with their distinctive black and yellow design. You'll find them on streets, in bus shelters and at Tube and mainline rail stations.

Based on extensive research, the easy-to-use systempresents information in a range of ways, including on maps and signs, to help people find their way. It's also integrated with other transport modes so when people are leaving the Underground, for example, they can quickly identify the route to their destination.
