Introduction

TiP Year One is a professional development programme which aims to develop relationships between teachers from different schools who are keen to explore opportunities to work with art as a teaching and learning resource. The course is open to twentythirty teachers at Tate St Ivesfor Tate Britain and twenty for Tate Modern per year. The programme takes place over three terms and includes threefour sessions at theyour chosen gallery. Through a combination of Inset and artist led workshops with your students, you will be encouraged to develop an innovative arts project, including a visit to the gallery for you and your students.

TiP is facilitated by experienced artist educators who are part of our team that regularly plan and facilitate the Tate Schools and Tteachers Programme. The course is introduced and overseen by the Schools and Teachers Curators and Assistant Curators.

Objectives:

  • To use the changing displays at Tate St Ives, and the Barbara Hepworth Museum & Sculpture GardenTate’s Collection as a basis for developing subject knowledge of historic, modern and contemporary art.
  • To explore a range of strategies for using the gallery as a teaching and learning resource.
  • To identify strategies for engaging children with original artworkthe Collection and extending their experience in the classroom through practical and theoretical work.
  • To bring artist educators and teachers together to provide a bridge between the classroom and the gallery and to facilitate practice sharing.
  • To provide opportunities for teachers to reflect on their practice.
  • To create opportunities for teachers to work with their peers over the duration of the programme

Step 1: INSET 1

Explore Tate’s Collections and exhibitionsTate St Ives displays and the Barbara Hepworth Museum & Sculpture Garden and discuss the value of visiting a gallery.

Introduce Tate’s ‘Ways In’ methodology for working with works of art.

Identify practical solutions to ensuring a successful visit to the gallery with a group through pre-visit preparation work.

Explore a variety of resources at Tate Britain or Tate Modern to extend and support your visit beyond the gallery. Introduce resource and research facilities

Hear about ways to link with Cornwall Learning’s SCIP programmeDevelop a participatory project.

Step 2: TiP Web Based Induction Evening

Work with Tate E-learning Curator to explore and learn how to use this facility.

Discuss possible individual, pair or group contributions over the following two terms.

Upload information from Inset One, including personal expectations and project outlines.

Step 23: Tate-led Schools Workshop

Observe and participate in artist-educator led schools workshopssessions at Tate Britain or Tate Modern.Tate St Ives or the Barbara Hepworth Museum & Sculpture Garden. Sessions Workshops offer an in-depth look at artworks in the gallery on a chosen theme. Using a variety of approaches including looking, thinking, discussion, resource-based activities and small-group tasks, students develop and test their own interpretations of artworks on display.

Bookings must be taken by 16 October for Tate Britain and 11 November for Tate Modern 2008 at the latest. If you require advice regarding choice of theme prior to booking please call 020 7887 8767 for Tate Britain or 020 7401 5234 for Tate Modern.

Once you have made your workshop group visit booking, you will be posted a confirmation letter and the appropriate literature regarding rules and regulations relating to your gallery visit. Please pay particular attention to the guidelines and Health and Safety statement.

Step 34: Inset 2, Group VisitWorkshop Evaluation and Project Development

Participants feedback and share ideas about their gallery sessionworkshop.

The approaches used are discussed, summarised and evaluated within the group alongside ideas for future follow-up projects with Tate St Ives or the Barbara Hepworth Museum & Sculpture GardenBritain or Tate Modern.

Participants spend time in the gallery devising activities and building skills to facilitate gallery sessions with groups.

Step 45: Follow up Projects in School including Self-Directed visit at Tate St Ives or Hepworth Museum & Sculpture Gardenate Britain or Tate Modern.

Participants are asked to develop a classroom project that uses Tate's Collection as a teaching and learning resource. This project should extend and develop your classroom practice and reflect your area of interest and ambition, and will involve a self-directed group visit facilitated by you. You are asked to document and record this process to share with other TiP participants.

Step 56: Practice sharing and Evaluationg event
This practice sharing event will be an opportunity for TiP teachers to present and discuss their projects with peers from the programme as well as to reflect upon their professional development throughout the year. Teachers will have a chance to evaluate the value of practice sharing both in groups and online and to express their ideas regarding possible follow up projects.complete SCIP reports in a supportive environment and evaluate their experience of TiP.

Places
There are twenty places available at Tate Britain and twenty at Tate ModernSt Ives per year. Wherever possible Tate recommends that two teachers from each school enrol in order to provide support for one another during the schools based element of the project. If appropriate, one of the teachers could be from another relevant position from within the school such as a classroom assistant or Deputy Head. However, TiP is designed to encourage teachers from different schools to work collaboratively and applications from individuals will be accepted.

Costs
TiP costs £360 in total for two teachers from one school or £180 per teacher.
