TIP 2: Disabling Pop-up Blockers

This Job Aid explains how to disable Pop-up Blockers for two Internet Browsers supported by the university: Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. It covers how to disable Pop-up Blockers on ALL Web sites you visit. It also explains how to disable Pop-up Blockers only on Web sites you specify.

In addition, this Job Aid explains how to use your Control Key to see Pop-ups on a case-by-case basis when you have disabled Pop-ups on your computer.

Internet Explorer

Allowing Pop-ups on ALL Web Sites

1.From any Web page, select

Tools

Internet Options.

The Internet Options window will open.

2.Click on the Privacy tab. The Settings and Pop-up Blocker window appears.

3.. Locate the Pop-up Blocker section of the window. If you want to be able to view pop-ups on every Web site you visit, leave the Block pop-ups box unchecked.

4.Click on OK.

Internet Explorer

Allowing Pop-ups only on SPECIFIED Web Sites

If you generally want Pop-ups to be blocked, but need to be able to view them on certain Web sites, it is possible to specify the Web sites on which you wish to allow Pop-ups.

1.From any Web page, select

Tools

Internet Options.

The Internet Options window will open.

2.Click on the Privacy tab. The Settings and Pop-up Blocker window appears.

3.In the Pop-up Blocker section, click in the Block pop-ups check box.

4.Select Settings. The Pop-up Blocker Settings window appears.

5.Type in the Web address of the site on which you want to be able to view pop-ups. For the Finance System, this is

7.The Web site you just typed now appears in the Allowed sites box.

8.Click on Close. You will return to the Internet Options window.

9.Click once on OK, and you will return to your Internet Browser.

Firefox

Allowing Pop-ups on ALL Web Sites

1.From any Web page, select

Options.

The Options window will open

2.Select Web Features. The Web Features window will open.

3.If you want to be able to view Popup windows on all Web sites you visit, de-select the Block Popup Windows check box.

4.Click OK. You will return to your Web browser.

Firefox

Allowing Pop-ups on SPECIFIC Web Sites

1.From any Web page, select

Tools

Options.

The Options window will open

2.Select Web Features. The Web Features window will open.

3.With the Block Popup Windows checked, click once on Allowed Sites. The Allowed Sites window will open.

4.Type Web address of the site on which you want to be able to view pop-ups. For the Finance System, this is

6.The Web site you just typed appears in the Site box.

7.Click on OK. You will return to the Web Features window.

8.Click once on OK, and you will return to your Internet Browser.

Using Your Control Key

If you prefer to work in an environment in which Pop-ups are always disabled, you can use the Control Key on your keyboard on an as-needed basis to view Pop-ups. For example, if you were trying to print a Journal Entry, you would

  • press the Control Key and hold it down
  • while using your mouse to click on the Printer icon.
