Tin Bin Showdown Tournament Rules

The purpose of this tournament is to provide a fun hockey experience and promote half ice hockey.

General Information:

  • When coming to the tournament, please ask your players to come dressed in hockey gear. Come to the rink with skates, gloves and helmet in hand. This will help with the congestion in the locker rooms as there will be two teams per locker room in Osseo East/West.
  • Remind your team to practice good sportsmanship and have fun playing the great game of hockey. While we will be keeping score, the focus of this tournament is on fun, and making for a great weekend hockey experience.

Format: Pool play/round robin (Saturday) and a final four bracket tournament based on seed of each pool on (Sunday). Games will be 40 mins in length. At Osseo East/West, the rink will be setup with dasher-boards setup at the red-line. Players will enter the ice surface from the player benches. Teams will switch sides during the intermission on the ice and player bench. At the 3O3 rink, the play will be on the full ice.

Teams: Team size 12 to 16 skaters and a goalie

Basic Playing Rules:

  • Sessions will be 90 mins in length, and then the Zamboni will clean the ice prior to the next session. Each session will comprise of two 40 min games. To keep things running on time there will be no pucks on the ice for warm-ups (2 mins in length).
  • Games will be 40 minutes running time (2 min skating warm up, 1 min shifts and 1 min intermission). Each half will be approximately 20 minutes.
  • Play will start with a face off at the beginning of the first and second half
  • Each team will have 4 skaters (4v4) and a goalie to start the game.
  • There are no off-sides or icing.
  • Line changes will be initiated by the scoreboard horn every 1 minute. A puck will be placed at a designated neutral location (puck drop zone) when a new shift starts. There will be no changing on the fly.
  • When a goal is scored all four skaters from the scoring team must tag up to the “tag up” line (center line). All 4 players must be tagged up at the same time before any attacking player enters the zone.
  • When the goalie freezes the puck the four players from the offensive team must tag up on the “tag up” line (center line).
  • The scorekeeper will raise hand until players pass the center line.
  • When a penalty occurs, a penalty shot shall be awarded. Penalty shot will start at the “tag up” line and remainingplayers will line up approx. five feet behind the “tag up” line. The referee will initiate the start of the penalty shot by telling the player to go. The remainder of the players will start when the referee blows the whistle.
  • If the player scores, then standard goal score tag up rule applies.
  • If the player misses, then play the puck will be played live but the penalty shooter must tag up.
  • If the line change horn sound goes off during the penalty shot, the penalty shot will continue until the shot is completed. The lines will then change when the referee drops the puck in the puck drop zone.
  • If the puck leaves the ice surface (over the dividers or glass) a puck will be placed in the puck drop zone.
  • Teams are not allowed to shorten the bench (a player must wait at least 1 shifts before going onto the ice again), if a team violates this rule, a penalty shot will be awarded.
  • No player can play 2 consecutive shifts.
  • The goalie can be pulled only during the last 2 shifts (2 mins remaining in the game). Any player is eligible to replace the goalie but is not eligible to compete in 2 consecutive shifts.
  • If an injury does occur, the player may leave the ice and the next player can enter the ice. The player that enters the ice must change at the sound of the horn. Stoppage of play may occur if the referee feels stoppage is required.
  • Round robin games can end in a tie.
  • Tournament games will end with a 3 player shoot out, if tied after the 3 players, then a sudden death shoot out will occur.

Penalties:

USA Hockey playing rules apply. Offending player is not required to leave the ice. A player may be removed from the ice surface if the infraction is deemed irresponsible or consistently a repeat offender.

Team Eligibility:

Teams must be USA hockey registered through their affiliated association. The intent of this rule is to avoid “All Star” teams.

Tournament Seedings:

Teams will be seeded based on the standings. Teams will be awarded 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and 0 points for a loss.

Tie Breakers:

If teams are tied after the round robin, then the following will decide tournament seeding:

  1. Head to head
  2. Goals against
  3. Goals scored
  4. Coin flip
