GENETICS: Smile for the Camera BABY!!!!!!!!!!!
Materials:
Colored Pencils or Colored Markers,
Art Paper
Pencil
1 Penny
Timeline: Picture One 50 minute class period; Presentations One 50 minute class period
Directions:
- Look at the penny. Heads will always represent a dominant allele (see your Quizlet vocabulary study cards to review definitions) and tails will always represent a recessive allele.
- Look at the table below and you will see the two parents. Remember “23 chromosomes from mom and 23 chromosomes from dad make ME.” You may choose to work alone or with a partner to determine genotypes and phenotypes.
- Let’s use Mom as an example. You will flip your penny once. If it lands on heads circle the dominant allele. If it lands on tails circle the recessive allele.
- Looking at the table the next column asks use to write the genotype. Write the genotype in the scientifically correct way capital letter first and lower case letter second. Remember the dominant allele is always written with a capital letter and the recessive allele is written as a lower case letter. Together you have the genotype for your baby’s trait.
- Use the key on the last page to determine the phenotype for all the traits for your baby.
- Complete the table before you begin to draw your baby.
- Don’t forget to name your baby!
Mom and dad have a trait for being able to roll their tongues.
Possible alleles for Mom: RrDad: Rr
- Flip your coin for mom’s first allele of the trait. It lands on tails. Circle the lower case “r.”
- Flip your coin for Dad’s allele of the trait. It lands on heads. Circle the upper case “R.”
- Writ the genotypefor your baby in the table. Rr
- Write the phenotype for your baby. Can roll tongue
