TiffinUniversity Computer Laboratory Policy

As a student at TiffinUniversity, the computer laboratories are provided as a service. Below are policies which must be observed by all students who wish to utilize the campus computer systems, including the electronic mail system.

EACH STUDENT MUST TAKE NOTICE that his or her network account will be disabled for any violation of the following policies and will only be reactivated upon the discretion of the Dean of Students. As a condition to using the computer laboratories, each student must (1) carefully read the following policies; and, (2) indicate your understanding and agreement to observe these policies by signing and dating in the space provided.

GENERAL POLICY

I. PROPER USE.
Improper use of the computer laboratories is prohibited. This includes damaging the equipment and/or using the services in any way which degrades or demeans another individual such as indecent use of the electronic mail resources.

No person shall attempt to access or utilize the TiffinUniversity computer system where such access or use is unauthorized. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

1. using, tampering with, or attempting to obtain another person's password;

2. drive partitioning; and formatting

3. intentionally damaging, tampering with or erasing computer files other than those created by you.

II. PRIVACY.
Each person shall respect the privacy of another person's physical and intellectual property, i.e. no person shall confiscate, eliminate or cause damage to another person's computer disk.

III. LICENSING.
No person shall copy or obtain in any way, software which has been licensed to TiffinUniversity.

Any damage caused by someone who has attempted to illegally copy a disk owned by TiffinUniversity shall be charged with the replacement cost of the disk.

Any and all personally acquired software are absolutely prohibited from use in the TiffinUniversity computer laboratories.

ELECTRONIC MAIL SYSTEM POLICY

I. INTRODUCTION.
This policy applies to all members of the University community and refers to all electronic mail resources at the University.

Individual departments and administrative units may define additional "conditions of use" for electronic mail facilities under their supervision. Any such additional conditions must be consistent with this overall policy but may include more detailed guidelines and, where necessary and appropriate, additional restrictions.

Any person who uses the University's electronic mail facilities consents to all of the provisions of this policy and agrees to comply with all of its terms and conditions and with all applicable state and federal laws and regulations.

Any user of the electronic mail system whose actions involving electronic mail violate this policy, or any other University policy or regulation, may be subject to limitations or elimination of electronic mail privileges as well as other disciplinary actions.

II. ACCESS.
It is the University's intent to provide basic, network-connected electronic mail facilities for the on-campus use of all faculty, students, and appropriate staff. It is also the University's intent to provide a communications link between the on-campus electronic mail system and the mail systems that operate on the national and international data networks.

In the future, it may be necessary to recover some or all costs of providing the facilities from schools, administrative units or individuals, in the form of usage charges.

III. PROPER USE.
The University provides electronic mail facilities to support its instructional, research, and service activities and associated administrative functions. Any use of the facilities that interferes with these activities and functions or does not respect the image and reputation of TiffinUniversity is improper.

In general, policies and regulations that apply to other forms of communications at the University also apply to electronic mail.

In addition, the following specific actions and use of electronic mail are improper:

1. Concealment or misrepresentation of names or affiliations in electronic mail message.

2. Alteration of source or destination addresses of electronic mail.

3. Use of electronic mail facilities for commercial or private business purposes.

4. Use of electronic mail which unreasonably interferes with or threatens other individuals.

IV. PRIVACY
The University is not a publisher of the material which becomes the subject of electronic mail messages and it cannot guarantee the privacy or confidentiality of any electronic mail message or document. While the University electronic mail administrators will not monitor the contents of electronic mail messages as a routine procedure, the University does reserve the right to inspect, copy, store, and disclose the contents of electronic mail messages at any time.
