THUNDERBOLTS FALL IN PRESEASON BENEFIT GAME
Brad Mumma pitched three scoreless innings and Kevin Rios collected two RBI as the Joliet Jackhammers knocked off the Windy City ThunderBolts 6-2 Sunday night in front of 769 fans watching at Standard Bank Stadium. The game Mother’s Day Classic benefitted ParkLawnSchool and RecreationCenter.
Mumma started and retired nine of the ten betters he faced for Joliet, the lone hit coming on a single from Sean Conley in the second inning.
Ross Stout was the starting pitcher for WindyCity. He went two innings, giving up one run on two hits.
With Joliet up 1-0 in the fourth, The Jackhammers then broke things open a little, scoring two more times with the help of some ThunderBolts defensive miscues. Phil Avlas reached on a two base error, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, Tim Alberts singled and scored on a Kevin Rios single.
The Jackhammers added to their lead again in the sixth when Rios hit another single, scoring Jake Whitesides who had singled earlier in the inning.
The ThunderBolts’ only scoring inning was the bottom of the sixth. After two quick groundouts, WindyCity took advantage of a Jackhammers error. Jeff Brewer reached when his ground ball went through the legs of Rios. He stole second and scored on a Nick Damas single. Damas promptly stole second and crossed the plate on a Doug Coe base hit.
After the two run rally, though, the WindyCity bats went quiet as they collected just one hit over the final three innings.
Joliet put the game away in the top of the seventh when they put two more runs on the board. A ThunderBolts error allowed Tug Gillingham to score, and Phil Avlas finished the scoring with an RBI single. Overall, there were eight errors in the game with Joliet committing five of them.
The two-time defending Frontier League Champion ThunderBolts will open will kick of their title defense on May 21 against the Rockford RiverHawks. For more information, contact the team at 708-489-BALL or visit them on the web at
