Interscholastic Competition:

Tournaments are scheduled weekly from the weekend (Friday and/or Saturday) of the 16th of September through the end of the semester. Most novice events are Saturday-only events. Our school transportation generally leaves around 6:30 a.m. and returns around 5:15 p.m. Some events run Friday night through Saturday noon. The NCFL national qualifier event is scheduled for December 2nd and 3rd. Regional 4-Speaker debate is December 16th/17th. Further post-season debate, including Sunflower State Novice, The Debate Coaches’ Invitational, Kansas Debate Classic, State 4-Speaker and State 2-Speaker occur in January 2017.

Tournament travel is requiredto pass the class because the benefits of competition will greatly enhance your learning. Before traveling as a member of the THS Debate Team a Competition Contract must be signed regarding team rules and policies. Additionally, the District Substance Abuse Policy must be signed. Travel earns credit for class.

Novices must attend the novice scrimmageANDtravel to two interscholastic debate tournament (3 interscholastic tournaments if the scrimmage is missed)

Experienced students must travel to: 2 interscholastic tournaments to be eligiblefor a Cgrade

3 interscholastic tournaments to be eligible for a B grade

4 interscholastic tournaments to be eligible for an A grade

Squad Nights:

The THS Debate Team will require participation in scheduled debate squad nights during the season. They will begin Friday, August 26 with a parent meeting at 8:30 p.m. followed by a team KICKOFF NITE until 1:30 a.m..Subsequent squad nights will offeredtwice per week from 7:00- 9:00 pm. The squad night on 9/15will bethe novice scrimmage night and is a requirement for EVERYONE enrolled in the class. After school prep can substitute for squad nights, but must be planned in advance and officially logged.

Lettering:

1. Pass class w/ ‘B’ or better5. Remain eligible for the entire season

2. Attend 4 tournaments as a competitor6. Follow all Competition Contract guidelines

3. Win at least 7 rounds7. Complete all required tournament reports online

4. Cover 15 rounds of judging for the THS Inv.8. Attend 6 (or equivalent) scheduled squad nights
