JOB DESCRIPTION - ADVOCATE

JOB CLASSIFICATION –NON-EXEMPT

Duties:

1. Conduct local and statewide advocacy efforts from an independent living philosophy perspective.

2. Represent TRCIL Services, Inc. and people with disabilities in public meetings and gatherings.

3. Establish and maintain more personal relationships with the

Legislatureincluding but not limited to city councils, state and federal legislators.

4. Participate in training programs as required.

5. Increase education and training opportunities for people with disabilities and their advocates; re: activities, issues, and developments relative to people with disabilities.

6. Keep apprised of and TRCIL Services, Inc. staff and consumers abreast of local, statewide and national activities, issues, and developments relative to people with disabilities.

7. Establish and maintain relations with existing consumer controlled, cross-disability regional advocacy groups.

8. Maintain existing Regional Action Teams (RAT’s), providing community organizing support/trainingto help these groups become established then technical assistance to maintain their efforts.

9. Ensure that all meetings are accessible and materials and communications are available in an accessible format.

10. Interact with consumers in a professional manner with respect for their rights and maintain strict adherence to the independent living philosophy.

11. Provide Individual and Systems Advocacy on issues that will promote the independence, integration, and full community participation of persons with disabilities.

12. Support the efforts of all people to learn and apply self-advocacy skills.

13. Report to the Program Manager of CIL Services.

14. Attend outside meetings as requested by Program Manager.

15. Provides report on monthly activities to supervisor by 5th of the following month.

Qualifications:

1. Bachelors or Associate Degree in Liberal Arts or Science.

2. Minimum of two years of direct experience working with people with disabilities. Experience may substitute for educational requirements

3. Knowledge of and commitment to the independent philosophy.

4. Commitment to a cross-disability service delivery system.

5. Proven ability to network with diverse groups, to facilitate group process and to organize community groups.

6. Proven ability to plan and coordinate community events.

7. Knowledge of and familiarity with cross-disability organizations and programs.

8. Ability to travel throughout a multi-county area.

9. Personal experience with a disability preferred.
