Spotlight on ICSS 2017

Three days of science and solutions in Stockholm

Last week, more than 100 leaders in sustainability from around the world met in Stockholm for the 7th International Conference on Sustainability Science. Participants talked about international sustainability targets and "urban tinkering" and tried out ales at a beer tasting to learn about sustainable brewing. Read the latest issue of Anthropocene magazine
Anthropocene – Innovation in the Human Age has launched its second issue, focusing on the "Great Decoupling." The magazine asks how global economies have grown in recent years without causing an equal spike in greenhouse gas emissions. It includes features by The Economist's Oliver Morton and scientists from the Global Carbon Project. Read more...

Announcing PEGASuS winners
Five international projects are the recipients of grants from the first phase of the Future EarthProgram for Early-stage Grants Advancing Sustainability Science (PEGASuS). Opportunities in cities and climate change
The organisers of the 2018 Cities and Climate Change Science Conference have announced a call for abstracts and sessions. This international event, which will be held in March in Edmonton, Canada, will investigate how cities contribute to climate change – and the role they can play in solving it. Deadline 6 October. AIMES 2.0 kicks off in Sweden
At a conference this week in Stockholm, leading scientists announced the launch of the latest phase in the evolution of Analysis, Integration and Modelling of the Earth System (AIMES). In this next step, the project will draw on research from the social sciences to explore how humans influence the planet's dynamics. Read more...

Scientific Steering Committee openings
Two Global Research Projects of Future Earth are looking for new members to join their Scientific Steering Committees (SSC). Apply for leadership roles in the Integrated Land Ecosystem-Atmosphere Processes Study (iLEAPS) by 1 September and Integrated Marine Biosphere Research (IMBeR) by 4 September.

Join an early career workshop in Estonia
Future Earth invites early career researchers and practitioners to participate in a workshop linked to an upcoming conference on nature-based solutions in Tallinn, Estonia. At the workshop, which will run from 23 to 24 October 2017, participants will propose policy recommendations for sustainable urban development. Apply by 10 September. Read more...
