Good morning,

Attached is a draft of the Social Studies Economics area revision and a list to be considered when reviewing the proposed dual licensure program in Elementary Education and Special Education.

Jane Ann

Thoughts on proposed Elementary Education and Special Education Dual Program:

  • Where in the projection of major courses do the students receive method course instruction for Math and Science?
  • Students will be required to complete 4 PRAXIS II specialty exams before student teaching. Must consider the cost (approx. $375) and the timing for the exams according to the course offerings.
  • Additional space in the “special method courses” of A&D 201, HK 320, HK 322 and MUS 324 would need to be negotiated with the different departments.
  • May want to consider HK 326 – “Foundations of Adapted Physical Education” in place of HK 320 and HK 322. This would open credit hours to include a Math/Science method course.
  • The Proposed Program Outline does not include EAS 102, but EAS 102 is listed on the Courses to be Taken page.
  • EAS 312 is listed on the Courses to be Eliminated or Replaced page, but is included in the graph under Content Courses – 45-47 HRS.EAS 102 is not included on the Content Courses – 45-47 HRS.
  • Should Purdue’s undergraduate individual Elementary and Special Education programs combine and only offer the dual program? Should this be how Purdue is different from the other state programs?
  • Dual program will appeal to students that struggle with completing “General Education Requirements”, but excel in education coursework.
  • No Foreign Language – ELED requires 3rd semester proficiency
  • Only 3 science courses – ELED requires 6
  • Only 1 literature course – ELED requires 2
  • No linguistics/language development course – ELED requires 1
  • Only 1 history course – ELED requires 2
  • Dual licensure would begin to help meet both the state and nation shortage of Special Education teachers.
  • Some Field Experience may need to return to the original reform plans. (case studies, telecasts, internet connections, on campus programs (College Mentors for Kids, Super Saturday), off campus programs (before and after school programs offered by clubs, schools, YMCA and YWCA)
  • Dual licensure program proposes to student teach in Special Education only – EDPS 498. Would we need to configure once again an 8/8 week placement for experience is both majors?
  • Have we mapped the additional licensure area of Reading to the dual program, since we would be removing a literature course and a linguistics course?
  • The dual licensure program has the potential to become our largest undergraduate program.
