“Thought for the Week”

Movie Tickets to Give Away

For a number of reasons, the school has possession of 17 children’s movie tickets which are close to their lapse date. Originally, they had to be used by the 27 July, 2017. We could not get a refund for the tickets and were only able to extend the life of the tickets by a month to 31 August, 2017. We are not able to on-sell the tickets but we are willing to offer them for free to any parents who may want them on a first-in basis.

The tickets can be used in most cinema chains (BCC, Greater Union, Event and Village Roadshow). There are some conditions attached, including using them for any session on all days except Saturdays when they can only be used for session times before 5pm.

Please contact the school office if you would like some of these tickets. We would hate for these tickets to go to waste and not be used. However, please understand, if there is a big demand, we may have to limit the number of tickets per family.

Annual School

Opinion Survey

Last week we received this year’s school opinion survey forms. Parents and caregivers, school staff and students are encouraged to have their say in this year’s School Opinion Survey by providing their opinions about what our school does well and how our school can improve.

Access details for the parent/caregiver survey were sent home today and parents/caregivers are invited to complete their survey online. School computers can be made available if re-quired

The online survey should only take 10 minutes to complete.

Last year only 2 parents completed the survey. Needless to say, we would love for every one of our parents to complete it so that we will be able to plan for our school’s improvement in the coming years

Woolworths

“Earn and Learn”

Promotion

Rathdowney State School is participating in this year’s Woolworths Earn and Learn Program.

From Wednesday 15th July to Tuesday 8 September when you shop at Woolworths you can collect Woolworths Earn and Learn Stickers form the checkout operator and place them on a Woolworths Earn and Learn Sticker Sheet. There will be one Woolworths Earn and Learn Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco and gift cards). Once completed, simply place the Sticker Sheet in the Collection Box, either at the school or at your local Woolworths. Sticker Sheets can be collected and/or returned at the school office.

This community program enables schools and early learning centres across Australia to earn educational resources. This year Woolworths have partnered with Modern Teaching Aids – Australia’s biggest supplier of resources for schools. This means schools can choose resources across every category including Science, Sports, Mathematics, English, Arts and Craft and more.

Woolworths

Collectable $2 Coins

The Royal Australian Mint has partnered with Woolworths to release a special edition $2 coin series. The students will be given a collection folder in which to keep the 3 coins being released. These coins relate to the classic Australian children’s book, “Possum Magic”. The coins are being released from all Woolworths supermarket stores nationally on three consecutive Tuesdays beginning next Tuesday, 15 August for the first coin. Many of these coins are likely to enter circulation, so you may find them in your change in the days, weeks and months, or even years to follow. It’s a great way to introduce the children to the hobby of coin collecting which is one of the oldest and most popular hobbies in the world.

Happy collecting!

Visit from QFRS

Earlier this week, we were visited by the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service.

In recent years, the students have done the same program at the Beaudesert Show and received a show bag of goodies each after the program.

During their visit, three firemen spoke to students and staff about fire safety, showed the students their fire truck and fire-fighting equipment and even allowed the students to hold the hose to put out a pretend fire! During the activity some of the students became a little wet – sorry, Mums and Dads. But it was a lot of fun. The QFRS left some souvenirs for the students to share.

The students were all very excited and thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

NAIDOC Day

Next Friday, 18 August, the students will be travelling by bus to NAIDOC Day at Hillview School.

Last year all the small schools in our area attended this day at Hillview. As a result, the students learned much about our indigenous culture and heritage, which is a focus of much of what we do in our schoolwork. This day gives our students a chance to learn and experience our indigenous culture first hand. Students from all four local schools will be involved in such activities as playing traditional games, doing a song lines workshops, stones and stories, art workshops, learning about ‘The Dreaming’, and more.

Students will need to wear full school uniform, a school hat for the day and bring a water bottle and some morning tea. Lunch is a sausage sizzle barbeque for everyone.

The cost of the bus to Hillview is paid by the school so there is no cost to the students. However, we are asking the students to pay $4 each to help with the cost of materials and their lunches on the day.

There is a permission form attached to this newsletter to be returned by next Wednesday, 16 August.

STEM

Day of Excellence - Tuesday, 15 August

On Tuesday next week, some 40 talented science students from Prep and Year1 from around the Beaudesert cluster of schools will be attending a STEM Day at Rathdowney State School’s hall. Teachers from Hillview school have organised the activities and will be supervising here on the day.

Students from Year 3, Max, Rebekah and Keith will be attending Flagstone primary school for their activities.

Unfortunately, our year 4 and 5 students who were selected to go to activities at Woodhill State School are now not able to attend. Woodhill State School have told us that they are unable to accommodate them on the day. Our sincere apologies go to the affected students and their families.

Prep- 3 News

This week we have continued on with our poetry unit. The students had a go at writing their own simple poetry about an animal of their choice. This proved difficult for some but they all took the challenge and created some fantastic poems. I have attached some below.

In Maths this week, the Preps have been learning about patterns and shape which will eventually lead to algebra. They have also been learning how to group objects and share. This is the basics of beginning multiplication. The Year 1s have been learning about number facts and how they relate to each other. We focused on addition turnarounds. The year 2s and 3s have continued to learn more about multiplication and we have been practicing our 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

This week I have really emphasised the importance of being kind to others. To practise this skill, I set a challenge for the students in my class to do something kind for someone else. This could be for someone at school or at home. When they did something that was kind, they had to write it down and put it into a basket for us to share at the end of the week. The students did a great job at being kind and helping others. Great work Prep-3!
