Welcome Back
Welcome to all parents, students and staff. I am excited to start my fourth year as Principal at Thornton High School.
All of our staff and teachers are returning this year: Genard Buco, Sylvia Garcia-Lechelt, Galit Kahn, Dana Martinezmoles, Sarah Perleschi, David Roberts, Kirk Sands, Karla Talkoff, Ed Lopez, Yvette Zee, Debbi Jacobs-Levine, Pat Boreni, Si Sirhan, Liz DeNatale, Michele Huerta, Mario Menjivar Jr., and Michelle Bautista. We are looking forward to a successful school year and we are working hard to ensure a smooth transition for all students into our program. We look forward to seeing you all graduate!

School Hours & the Wheel
Students at Thornton are in school from 9am to 2:45pm, except on Wednesdays from 9am to 1pm. We are using a rotational schedule so when you look at student’s attendance (at back to school night or on ParentVue) you might notice your student being late or unexcused during the day. Also, they are participating in a two week (elective) Wheel. The classes are career exploration, art, various sports, executive functions (organization and prioritizing- life skills), APEX and mindfulness.
THS Backpacks
Every day, students should carry a backpack or bag for school books and supplies. We have THS backpacks available for a donation of $5.
StarVista on Campus
Welcome to THS, Melissa Guariglia, Psy.D., who will be on campus M, W, + Th, to assist Karla Talkoff with Wellness Counseling.
Homework
All students should be completing at least two hours of homework each night. Please contact their homeroom teacher if a student tells you they do not have any work.
Elective Credits
Students are required to earn a minimum of ten elective credits outside of the school day each semester. Students can take concurrent enrollment classes at Skyline College, complete Work Experience & Community Service or attend counseling. Please make sure your child has checked in with Karla Talkoff and is working towards these credits.
ELECTRONICS/CELL PHONE POLICY
Reminder: Students are not allowed to use electronics or cell phones on campus, this includes during breaks, brunch, and lunch.
Please call the office if you need to get in touch with your student.

School Site Council/ELAC
We are looking for parents and students to participate in our School Site Council/English Language Advisory Committee. The council will meet four times during the school year to review Thornton’s academic goals and budget. Thornton High School is more successful when there is input from all stakeholders. If you would like to be involved, please call Ms. Casey at 650-550-7843 or email . Please come at 5pm on October 28th to the meeting. We especially need parents of our English Language Learners to participate.
Report Cards/Honor Roll
Report cards are distributed this quarter via Back to School Night on October 28, 6:00pm. We want to remind students and parents to look at the total amount of credits a student earns. Students should earn between 16 -20 credits per quarter. To be on the honor roll, a student needs to earn a minimum of 20 credits (16 of which should be from core classes- not electives), no referrals and 80% or higher attendance during the quarter.
Core Classes
Core classes are direct instruction classes that are held during second, third and fifth periods. Students are assigned to classes according to the credits that they need. During the first semester, we are teaching English-EDGE, English 11 and 12, Math Course 2 Bridge, Math Course 3 Bridge, US History, World History, Physics, Biology, Economics & Government, and Health.
Attendance
Remember that students are working on credit recovery. Being on time and attending school every day is crucial to their success. Please contact the school at 650-550-7840 if your child is going to be late or absent (our hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 – 3:45).
