INTRODUCTION
Volleyballisapopularsportwhichcanbeplayedbothindoorsandoutdoors.Itappealstopeopleofallagesandskilllevels.Itisfast-paced,withconstantjumpingandrun- ning,andthusprovidesastrenuousaerobicworkout.Italsorequiresmentalalertnessandquick,precisephysicalreactions.
ManyassociatevolleyballwiththebeachesofsouthernCaliforniaandinfact,anumberofprofessionalplayersgottheirstartby playingbeachvolleyball.However,vol-leyballispopularnotonlyonthebeaches,butinvirtuallyeverycountryoftheworld. In1964,itwasofficiallyrecognizedaspartoftheOlympicGames.
HISTORYOFTHEGAME
VolleyballoriginatedinMassachusettsin1895whenthedirectorofalocalYMCAused thebladderofabasketballforaballandatennisnetasthefirstvolleyballnet.Thegamewas regulated by theYMCAuntil 1928 when the UnitedStatesVolleyballAssociationwasfounded.

Thename“volleyball”isnotanentirelyaccuratedescriptionofthissport.Theobjectof thegameishittheballoverthenetinsuchawaythattheopposingteamcannotreturnit.
Volleyballisplayedonacourtabout30feetwidebyabout60feetlong.Thenetisthreefeethighandspansthewidthoftheplayingarea.Thetopofthenetispositionedabouteightfeet(inmen’svolleyball)fromthefloororplayingsurface.Themodernvolleyballisaboutthesizeofasoccerballandweighsbetweeennineandtenounces.
Thegameisplayedbytwoopposingteams,withsixplayersoneachteam.Oncetheballisputintoplay,itis“volleyed”backandforthbetweentheteammatesuptothreetimesbeforeitishitoverthenetoruntilitfallstothefloor, ishitoutofboundsorateamcommitsafoul.Thesameplayermaynotmakeahittwiceinarow.Eveniftheballhitsaplayerbyaccident,itcountsasoneofthethreetouchesallowedperside.However,ifaplayerblocksaspike,theblockisnotconsidereda“hit.”
VOLLEYBALLSCORINGSYSTEMS
RALLYPOINTSCORING
Theteamwinningarallyscoresapoint.Whenthereceivingteamwinsarally,itgainsapointandtherighttoserve,anditsplayersrotateonepositionclockwise.Thebestthreeoffivegameswillwinmatches.Eachnon-decidinggamewillbewonbytheteamthatfirstscores25pointswithaminimumtwo-pointadvantage.Ifthereisadecidinggame,itwillbewonbytheteamthatfirst scores15pointswithaminimumtwo-pointadvantage.
SIDEOUTSCORING
Onlytheservingteammayscoreapoint,exceptinthedecidinggamewhenrally-pointscoringisused.Whenthereceivingteamwinsarally,itgainstherighttoserve(alsoscoringapointin

Ateamwinsagamebyscoring15pointswithatwo- pointadvantageandwinsthematchbywinningthebestofthreeorfivegames.Intheeventofa16-16tie,theteamscoringthe17thpointwinsanon-decidinggamewithonlyaone-pointadvantage.Inadecidinggamethereisnopointcap.
Almostallschoolshavechangedfrom“SideoutScor- ing”to“RallyPointScoring.”Rallyscoringlooksverysimilartoaside-outgame,withthemaindifferencebe-ingapointscoredeverytimetheballisblowndead.
Whatconstitutesamatchwhenyourallyscore?Teamswillplaythebestthreeoutof fivegames.“Game-point”forthefirstfourgameswillbe25points.(Youmustwinby twopoints.)Thefifthanddecidinggameisplayedto15.(Again,youmustwinby2 points.)
Howmuchtimeshouldbeallottedformatchesthatarerallyscored?Mostthreeoffiverallymatchesendinthreegames.Theapproximatelengthoftimeforagame(notincludingwarm-up)islessthan20minutes.Three-gamematchestakeapproximately60minutes,whilefive-gamematchestakeapproximately90minutes.Thenatureofvolleyballal-lowsgamestobesubstantiallyshorterwhenoneteamisstrongandanotherweak.Rallyscoringnolongeraccommodateslongnon-scoringperiodsduringagameormatch.
Whatisthe“letserve?”The“letserve”isaballthatwhen served,hitsthenet withouttouchingthenetantennaandcontinuesacrossthenetintotheopponent’scourt.Theletserveisaplayableliveball.Theletserveisastrategyusedtokeepthegamemovingwithfewerinterruptionsinplay.
Withthe“letserve”thereisnolongeraneedtotouchthenetwhengivingthesignaltoserve.
Time-outs:Eachteamisallowedamaximumoftwotime-outspergame.Atime-outisamaximumof60seconds,althoughplaymay resume sooner if both teams are ready prior to 60 seconds.

Agamehasatotalof25pointsexceptindecidinggames.Ifateamfailstoserveproperly,returntheball,orcommitsanyotherfault,theopponentwinstherallyandscoresthepoint.Eachgamemustbewonbyatwo-pointmargin.Amatchconsistsof thebestthreeoffivegames.Theteamwhichwinsthreegamesisthewinnerofthematch.
Volleyballrequiresareferee,whogenerallyhasthefinalword regardingpoints in dispute, anumpire who assists the referee,ascorekeeper,atimekeeperandlinesmen.Eventhoughtheremaybeofficialspresentduringagame,playerswhocommitfoulsareexpectedtocallouttheirownmistakes.
SKILLSANDTECHNIQUES
THEREADYPOSITIONANDJUMP
Oneofthebasicpositionsinvolleyballiscalledthe“readyposition.”Thekneesareslightlybentwithhandsatwaistlevelandelbowsnearthebodytoallowtheplayertoconcentrateontheball.Playersshouldlearnthispositionsothattimeisnotwastedwhen theballishit.Jumpingisalwaysdonenearthenet.Playersshouldpracticejumpingso thattheydonottouchthenet,orbumpintoorinjureotherplayers.Theyshouldalsorememberalwaystojumpparalleltothenet.
THESERVE:OVERHANDANDUNDERHAND
Servingisacrucialskillforthevolleyballplayertolearn.Thecardinalrulesofservingaresimple:donotsteponaboundaryline,andgettheballoverthenet.
Theoverhandserveisthemostpopularandeffectiveserve.Itissimilartoatennisserve.Theballisthrownintotheairsothatitrisesafewfeetabovetheserver’shead.Astheballcomesdown,therightarm(ifyouareright-handed)israisedupandbackwhiletheelbowcomesforward.Thearmisthenextendedattheelbowandtheserverhitstheballwiththeheelofthehand.

THEPASSORSET
Thepassisadifficultmoveformanybeginningplayers.Thisskilllookseasierthanitactuallyiswhenperformed.Oncetheballisserved,theplayerwhowillpasstheballgetsintopositionundertheballwithkneesbent,handsupandfingerscupped.Allthefingersandthetwothumbscontacttheball,buttheballdoesnottouchthepalmofthehand.
Whentheballisintheairovertheservingside’scourt,itmaybepasseduptothreetimesbeforeitisreturnedoverthenet.Oneplayercannotpasstheballtwiceinarow.
Notethatoverheadpassesarenotusedwhenthereturningballisa“spike.”
THESPIKE
Thespikeisoneofthemostdifficultplaysinvolleyball:aplayerhastorun,jumpandhittheballtoaspecificspotontheothersideofthenet.However,itisthebestoffensivemoveinvolley-ball,anditshouldbelearned.
Generally,aspikedballishitwithanopenhand.However,unlessaplayerisquiteexperienced,spikingaballcansometimesresultintheballgo- ingoutofboundsorintothenet.Rememberthatpracticeintiming,jumpingandhittingarerequiredtospikecorrectly.Aspikedball,hitproperly,canmoveuptoahundredmilesanhour.
THEFOREARMBOUNCEPASS-BUMP
Thebumpisusedforreceivingservesandspikeballs.Thisshotiseasytoexecutebecausetheballsimplybouncesorbumpsofftheclaspedhands,wristsorforearms.

ONE-HANDBOUNCE PASS-DIG
Thisisarecoveryshot,andisusediftheballreceivedislowandofftothesideofaplayer.Ifyoucannotmakeabumppass,useadigorsavepassinstead.Inthismove,thehandsarecupped.Theyarethenplacedundertheballjustbeforeithitsthefloor.
THEBLOCK
Thismoveisusedchieflyasadefensivepositiontostopspikedballs.Aswithspiking,timingisimportantinblocking.
Aplayermustanticipateanopponent’sspikeandpositionhimorherselfaccordingly.Theblockerthenjumpsjustafterthespikerhasjumped.Theblocker’s armsshouldbeextendedupwardwithfingersspreadwideapart.Thisallowstheballtobounceofftheheelsoftheblocker’shandsandlandontheoppositesideofthenet.
Thisistheonlymoveinvolleyballthatallowstheplayer’shandstogo overthetopofthenet.
EQUIPMENTANDCLOTHING
Standardclothingforplayingvolleyballiscomfortablesportswearwhichallowsforfreemovement.Gymshoesareamustsincemostgymsdonotallowanyoneonthefloorinregularshoes.Whenplayedonthebeach,attirerangesfromgymclothestoswimsuits.Manyplaybarefootinthesand.
