Field Trip to Public Library-- Tuesday, May 23 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

To make our trip to the Fredericton Public Library it is required that Adult Volunteers assist with the Field Trip. There is a student adult ratio that must be filled. Unfortunately, as of today I only have one adult volunteer. I am in need of at least 2 more adult volunteers. It is necessary to have one male volunteer to assist when a male student needs to use the washroom. Please recheck your schedules and see if it possible to assist us with our Fieldtrip. Please let me know ASAP if you can assist.

If you did not receive a permission slip for your child to take part in our Library Field Trip please let me know. I will send one home right away. If you did not get a form to complete for your child to get a Library Card please let me know ASAP and I will send one home.

This Week

Home Reading: New take home books will come home on Tuesday. Please return them by Friday. Remember that your child should practice reading their Home Reading Books to an adult at LEAST 3 times for each book. BY the third time fluency should be present. One of this week’s Home Reading Books will be a paper book about Shapes. Please be sure to include this book in Home Reading. It reinforces what we have been learning in Math.
Learning in Depth
I am very impressed with the work students did on their first homework assignment for Learning in Depth. Please remember that this should be completed by your child. You are more than welcome to provide assistance, support, and guidance. All printing should be at least attempted by your child. I know some students find printing very difficult. I expect that they at least print the first couple of words / sentences. Then you may finish the printing for him/ her.
New LID homework will be sent home tomorrow, Tuesday, and is due back on Thursday, May 18. Tuesday’s homework will be;
Find or make up a joke on your topic: this will come home on Tuesday and is due on Thursday..
Literacy
Sight Words
This week we weeks words - have, put
We have learned: me, I, it, like, the, is, in, can, was, and, to, play, a, that, at, see, he, my, you, said, went, had, go, love, all, here, we, with, be, or, for, good, will, am, has, did, she, of, look, as, are, very.
Please check Communication Bags for last week’s Show What You Know- Friday Sight Word Practice. Please sign and return. Remember students can use the Word Wall to spell these words. However they need to know the sound the word begins with to locate it on the Word Wall. Students are really learning how to use the Word Wall to find words they want to spell. Way to go!
Reading Strategies:
  • Eagle Eye: He has really good eyesight and reminds us that we need to look at the pictures for clues about what the words might say.
  • Lips the Fish: Fish have great lips! Lips the Fish reminds us that we need to get our lips ready to say the beginning sound of a word. We often combine Eagle Eye and Lips the Fish.
  • Stretchy Snake: Slowly stretch each letter sound to make the word
  • Chunky Monkey: Look for chunks you know inside of words (sing, flat, split)
This past week we really focused on students finding word chunks they know and smaller words within larger words. We will continue to practice focusing on Chunky monkey this week.
Remember to use the Beanie Baby Strategies when encountering an unknown word. Use Eagle Eyes first. Study the picture, Fish the LIPs to look at the letter the word begins with, Stretchy Snake to stretch the sounds in the unknown word out-beginning, middle, ending sounds, and Chunky Monkey.
Writing
This week students will be focusing on adding more detail to their writing They will be adding when the small moment they are writing about took place; last week, yesterday, a long time ago, on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, on the weekend.
Math
This week we will learn about 3 D shapes. I will be assessing students’ knowledge about 2D and 3 D shapes on Friday. Most of the assessment will be completed orally in interview form.
