Job Title: / Sixth Form Tutor (with experience as a Construction/Engineering Teacher)
Location: / The Whitehaven Academy, Cleator Moor Road, Whitehaven, Cumbria, CA28 8TY
Reporting to: / Head of Faculty Sixth Form

Job Summary

This role focuses on the delivery of the following activities:

  • The training of young people and adults in a range of vocational areas;
  • Effective contribution to the transition strategies developed by Whitehaven Academy for transition between Year 11-12 and beyond.

Sixth Form Tutor

This provision is focussed on transforming the lives students, enhancing their employment opportunities and meeting the needs of local employers.

The provision consists of a range of learning and skills opportunities (post 16 and post 18 provision) including: vocational qualifications; work based learning (including traineeships and apprenticeships); English & Maths (at all levels from entry level through to GCSE); employability; enterprise skills; ICT; community engagement; health & well-being, and SMSC.

  • Secure learner recruitment in line with Whitehaven Academy and Bright Tribe Trust policies;
  • Prepare, adapt, organise and maintain learning resources;
  • Set up the learning environment and ensure the day-to-day maintenance of equipment. Report and action defects as a priority;
  • Prepare for, and deliver, teaching and learning, marking, assessment and supervision of the learning experience and environment as required;
  • Develop schemes of work and deliver learning in line with these, learning plans and curriculum plans;
  • Supervise student activities in all locations;
  • Produce and carry out all administration relating to delivery as required;
  • Complete and maintain accurate records;
  • Contribute to learners personal development and responsibility for their own learning;
  • Support students through the learning process and assessment activities;
  • Assess, monitor and mark student work;
  • Assist students with action planning and recording achievement;
  • Contribute to the on-going development of provision at the Academy;
  • To implement the Academies policies on Health and safety at all times;
  • Track progress for attendance, punctuality and academic progress in line with academy policy.

Post Specific-Qualifications, knowledge, experience and expertise

  • Experience of working in the vocational area;
  • Experience of teaching/training in the vocational area;
  • Experience within the industry and vocational area;
  • Experience of teaching and learning methods to suit all learners and their appropriate programmes;
  • Appropriate vocational qualifications;
  • A teaching qualification or willingness to work towards one;
  • An assessor / verifier qualification or willingness to work towards one;
  • Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths or willingness to work towards them;
  • Ability to work effectively as part of team;
  • Ability to effectively plan and manage learning programmes to meet the needs of the local community, employers, government policy and funding rules;
  • Ability to effectively implement processes to improve the quality of provision to meet the requirements of the Ofsted Common Inspection Framework;
  • Understanding of the requirements of the Ofsted Common Inspection Framework;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with learners from a wide range of social and economic backgrounds;
  • An understanding of the barriers to learning faced by our most disadvantaged learners;
  • Effective time management skills;
  • Extended experience of effective partnership work;
  • Keeping up to date with subject and course developments and external requirement, such as exam boards and awarding bodies.
  • Experience of working as a tutor in a College or School environment with Key Stage 5 learners and ability to deliver BTEC or Industry (e.g. – City and Guilds) Level 1 and 2 Qualifications in Construction and Bricklaying or similar.
  • Up to Date Health and Safety Qualification (e.g. - First Aid Qualification).
  • To fulfil the duties of a teacher as set out in the DfE Professional Standards for teachers.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate students who may not have previously engaged with education or may be used to attending standalone institutions which are not part of a main school environment.

Other

  • Willingness to work outside normal office hours to meet the requirements of the post and the business needs.
  • Enhanced DBS clearance required.
