Position Purpose

This position will support the implementation of the Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) program in Aurukun using a variety of strategies including raising awareness of the health impacts of smoking, passive smoking and quitting pathways, supporting access to quit services, encouraging community involvement and promotingsmoke-free environments.

Technical/
Position Specific Accountabilities /
  • Engage with community members and other service providers to encourage involvement in the planning and delivery of TIS strategies and participation in program initiatives
  • Facilitate and/or support others to plan and implement community activities that promote smoking prevention and cessation, and encourage people to access quit services and attend a yearly health check
  • Promote and support smoke-free strategies within Apunipima and Cape York communities and exemplify non-smoking and quit smoking behaviours
  • Assist with the delivery of TIS social marketing strategies
  • Provide and record brief interventions and assistance to stop smoking, and/or refer clients to other health professionals for cessation support
  • Support the delivery of community group-based smoking cessation programs and encourage participation
  • Develop or source appropriate smoking cessation education resources
  • Engage with a range ofstakeholders to support the delivery of TIS initiatives
  • Collect data to assist with the monitoring and evaluation of the TIS program
  • Other duties as directed

Service Delivery /
  • Deliver primary health care services in accordance with the model of care and professional standards of practice
  • Respect and maintain client confidentiality at all times
  • Maintain accurate and up to date records of clients assessments and progress notes, ensuring the security of client documentation at all times
  • Provide timely and accurate reports in relation to client’s and the organisation’s activities
  • Respect cultural diversity and traditional Indigenous health practices
  • Use appropriate engagement and communication approaches consistent with agreed organisation, operational and community processes
  • Actively participate in community engagement activities, such as Health Action Team meetings and other community meetings to gather information to inform practice, and to impart knowledge to community groups
  • Work towards building capacity by working with and providing support and education within a multidisciplinary team, Health Action Teams (HAT), community members and service providers
  • Work effectively within a multidisciplinary and multicultural team, including in the case management and follow up of clients to ensure continuum of care
  • Actively participate in the continued development improvement of the service, including contribution to ongoing review and development of policies, procedures and operational strategies

Qualifications
Registrations
Associations /
  • Certificate III in Aboriginal and/or Torres StraitIslander Primary Health Care
or
  • Other qualifications or experience deemed relevant

Experience /
  • Experience engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, community members and health professionals
  • Demonstrated experience to deliver health awareness and education initiatives in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander settings

Knowledge/Skills /
  • Sound interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide range of clients and local service providers
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander culture, preferably in Cape York
  • Knowledge of smoking prevention and cessation programs and support, highly desirable

Additional Factors
Other / Current QLD Drivers Licence is preferred
This position is subject to pre-employment checks including a criminal history check clearance and a working with children suitability check (i.e. Blue Card).
Must be willing and have the ability to travel in Cape York either by light aircraft or 4WD as required
Limits of Authority / The Limits of Authority for this position are in accordance with the Apunipima Delegations Manual
Travel Frequency / The anticipated travel frequency requirement for this role is:
  • Community based: Non-frequent travel (may be requested to travel with 2 weeks’ notice)
