Volunteer Opportunity: NKO II

The Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo is seeking volunteers to assist with the second Northern Kickoff event this weekend. Fundraising opportunities are available for group registrations (minimum 10 people). Youth volunteers must be supervised by a responsible adult throughout their shift. Unsupervised volunteers need to be 16 years or older.

Available Positions:

  • Hospitality Set-up – June 24-26 - Responsible to assist staff in coordinating, transporting and stocking the supplies for the concession areas.
  • Signage Install Team – June 26 - Responsible to assist staff in hanging the event signage throughout the site.
  • Hospitality Service – June 27 - Pro Serve training required. Beer Hawkers & Bar Attendants.
  • Transportation Coordinators – June 27 - Responsible to assist in crowd control and providing onsite direction to guests at the bus corral area.
  • Ticket Scanners – June 27 - Responsible for scanning the tickets and crowd control as the guest enter the facility.
  • Ushers – June 27 - Responsible to assist guests to find their assigned seats and keep the aisles clear throughout the event.
  • Volunteer Hosts – June 27 - Responsible to check in volunteers and greet them at the volunteer lounge, while ensuring the lounge is properly maintained and serviced.
  • Volunteer Runners – June 27 - Responsible to bring volunteers from check in to the lounge and circulate amongst the volunteer areas to ensure volunteer needs are met.
  • Green Team – June 27 - Responsible for the cleanliness of the event site. Supplies provided.
  • Hospitality Take Down – June 29 - Responsible to assist staff in cleaning, inventory and storing the supplies for the concession areas.

Volunteer for Canada Day!

When: Various shifts Wednesday, July 1 from 8:30 am to 1:30pm

Each year, the RMWB relies on thousands of volunteers to help deliver successful events.

Our Canada Day celebrations are no different and wouldn’t be a success without dedicated people volunteering their valuable time. The Canada Day Parade is now recruiting over 100 volunteers to make this event run smoothly, helping out as barricade monitors, noisemaker distributors and registration personnel.

Canada Day Celebrations

When: Tuesday, June 30 at 7:15 p.m. to Wednesday, July 1 at 4:00 p.m.

Come celebrate Canada’s birthday with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

The Municipality in partnership with the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) and the Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo, host an annual TWO DAY Canada Day celebration beginning June 30 and ending on Canada Day, July 1.The annual event is a free, fun-filled, family-friendly celebration with something for everyone.Things kick off on the evening of June 30 with live entertainment featuring headliner Corb Lund presented by Country 93.3 FM, followed by a midnight fireworks display lighting up the sky over the Suncor Community Leisure Centre. This will lead into the Canada Day Pancake Breakfast hosted by the Wood Buffalo Multicultural Association at MacDonald Island Park on the morning of July 1, followed by the Country 93.3 Canada Day Parade in downtown Fort McMurray and an afternoon of fun, family-focused activities at MacDonald Island Park as the Canada Day celebrations continue.

Fort McKay Parks & Recreation

The Fort McKay Parks and Recreation Society created, and manages, the new state-of-the-art Fort McKay Fitness Centre.

Hours of Operation:

  • Monday through Thursday (11:00 am to 9 p.m.)
  • Saturday and Sunday (2:00 pm to 9:00 p.m.)

Location: Basement of the Dorothy McDonald Business Centre (entrance is on southeast side of building).

Monthly fees are only $20

KidSport

KidSport is a national not-for-profit organization that provides financial assistance for registration fees to kids aged 18 and under. Through a confidential application process we provide grants so they can play a season of sport.

The Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program

When: Applications will be accepted from Wednesday, July 1 to Sunday, November 15

Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities is a registered charity dedicated to removing financial barriers so kids across Canada have the opportunity to get off the sidelines and get into the game.

Jumpstart’s core purpose is to enrich the lives of kids (from 4 to 18) in need through sports and physical activity. We assist with the costs associated with registration, equipment and/or transportation.

Gameswear Community BBQ Celebration

When: Friday, July 3 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm

Where: Jubilee Plaza - 9915 Franklin Avenue

Join us for lunch and show off your Gameswear! If you don’t have any yet – this will be a great chance to get some from the pop-up boutique. This family-friendly event is open to the public and includes cultural program announcements, ticket sales and volunteer sign-up and records check for those wanting to get in the Games!

DJ QPID will be spinning the tunes, a face painter getting everyone into the spirit and visits with Mistiko, our official Games Mascot!

Beach Volleyball Court Opens at Keyano College

The court officially opened June 16 with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and is made possible by the support of LaPrairie Crane, the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games, and the Alberta Government.

The Court is located on the Southwest side of the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre (SSWC) and will be open to athletes, students and the community through the SSWC.

Syncrude Boreal Open

Where: Fort McMurray Golf Club

In its fifth year, the Syncrude Boreal Open will see 156 of some of the best golfers from around the world competing for a purse of $175,000. The quality of the field at the Syncrude Boreal Open will be world class. Over 30 players who have played on PGA TOUR Canada over the past 6 years have gone on to play on the PGA Tour including Nick Taylor, Mike Weir, Arron Oberholser, Chris DiMarco, John Malinger and Stephen Ames.

3rd Annual Fort McMurray Open Chess Tournament

When: Saturday July 4 and Sunday, July 5

Where: Syncrude Bob Lamb Center

Who: Open to everyone (knowledge of chess rules is mandatory)

Fee: $30.00 for adults, $15.00 for juniors under 18

Fort McMurray Chess Club is hosting the 3rd Annual Fort McMurray Open Chess Tournament with the participation of the top players of Alberta.

YMCA Child Care & Camp Services

Our camping heritage makes the Wood Buffalo YMCA day camp a trustworthy, solid and dependable choice. Meeting new friends, learning new skills, and enjoying fun-filled days in a caring, supervised environment is what YMCA day-camps are all about!

Summer Sports Camps (9-13 years)

The YMCA of Wood Buffalo is very proud to present three weeks of Summer Sports Camps for children ages 9 to 13. If your child loves playing sports, the YMCA is the place to be this summer. Come on in to the YMCA at 221 Tundra Drive and register your child today using the corresponding camp codes.

Three, one-week sessions:

Week 1: July 13 - July 17 (11292)
Week 2: July 20 - July 24 (11293)
Week 3: July 27 - July 31 (11294)

A typical day: Youth will spend most of the day engaged in physical literacy, training in the gym to learn the ‘Sport of the Day,’ followed by some refreshing time in the indoor pool.

Each camp will begin at 9am and end at 3pm.

3rd Annual Golf FORE Safety

The CSSE is hosting their 3rd Annual “Golf FORE Safety” Membership Drive Golf Tournament to be held on August 28, 2015, at 7:00 am at Miskinaw Golf Course at MacDonald Island, which welcomes any and all safety professionals from Fort McMurray and the Wood Buffalo region. Our goal is to continue making this an annual event and encourage local safety professionals to join the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering.

Event fees:

Single Entry $175 (includes power cart, 18 holes of golf and BBQ)

Team Entry $600 ($150/ player) (includes power cart, 18 holes of golf and BBQ)

ASAA Pay it Forward Scholarship

When: Deadline for submissions is Tuesday, June 30.

Details: ASAA is pleased to announce the launch of its annual Pay it Forward Scholarship offered to deserving student athletes in Alberta. This scholarship is for student athletes who contribute their time as either a coach or an official in either the school or community and is meant to recognize and reward those students who 'give back' to their school/community. The scholarship is $500 and will be awarded to 10 student athletes across the province (one from each of the ASAA's zones with Calgary and Edmonton receiving two each due to significantly higher populations). In partnership with Xerox, there will also be one overall recipient (from the 10 chosen) that will receive an additional $1000.
