Dear Parent/Guardian:

Today in your child’s classroom, I read the bookDiegoby Jeanette Winter. This book is based on the life of Diego Rivera, a world-famous Mexican muralist. Diego Rivera is often described as an artist of extraordinary talent, optimism, passion, love for his people, and pride for his culture and country. Many of Diego’s murals reflect important events in the history of Mexico. The murals helped establish the Mexican Mural Renaissance in the 1930’s. This was an important time period in Mexico when many murals were created to transmit powerful messages to the people.

This month’s dicho: “A picture is worth more than a thousand words.”

About Diego’s Artwork:Diego believed that murals allowed the common people the chance to see, appreciate, and take pride in their cultural heritage. It was his desire to educate the Mexican people about their identity, history, politics and their potential for the future through art.His artwork isrecognized forportraying thecultural traditions and daily lives of his people, especially the indigenous peoples. Diego did not want his art to be displayed in museums and galleries where only the upper-class would have access to it. He intentionally painted in public spaces where all people could see his artwork regardless of their race and social class. Diego Rivera’s artwork is unique, meaningful, and educational.

This month’s classroom activity: There were three activity options. The first option was for students to create a replica of Diego Rivera’s artwork as a class or in small group. An alternative first option was to create a muralof their current daily lives in the 21stcenturyusing the style of Diego Rivera’s work as a guide. The second activity option was for students to design a piece of artwork representative of their culture or country. The last activity option consisted of examining Diego Rivera’s paintings and interpreting the message in them.

Ideas to reinforce the message at home:

  • Ask your child about Diego Rivera and the type of artwork that he did.
  • Talk to your child about different types of art and why Diego preferred murals.
  • Look at murals from your culture or community and discuss with your child theirmessage.
