LAB #5-TRANSAXLE DISASSEMBLY

This lab will cover NATEF tasks C.2, C.3, C.4, C.5, C.8, C.9, C.10, C.12, C.13, C.14, and C.15.

Transaxle Power Flow

Procedure / Task completed
1.Reassemble transaxle main shaft on the work bench outside of the transaxle case.
2.Lay out transaxle input shaft, assembled main shaft, reverse idler gear, and overdrive gears, if separate, so you can easily see the relationship the gears have to each other.
3.Count and record the teeth on each gear.
GEARNUMBER OF TEETH
1st gear on input shaft______
1st gear on the main shaft______
2nd gear on input shaft______
2nd gear on the main shaft______
3rd gear on the input shaft______
3rd gear on the main shaft______
4th gear on the input shaft (skip if N/A)______
4th gear on the main shaft (skip if N/A)______
5th gear on the 5th gear shaft______
5th gear on input shaft______
Reverse gear on the input shaft ______
Reverse idler gear______
Reverse gear on the main shaft______
4.Use the gear tooth count for each gear to calculate the gear ratios of each gear set.
1st gear gear set: 1st gear input shaft/1st gear main shaft ______
2nd gear gear set: 2nd gear input shaft/2nd gear main shaft ______
3rd gear gear set: 3rd gear input shaft/3rd gear main shaft ______
4th gear gear set: 4th gear input shaft/1st gear main shaft ______
5th gear gear set: 5th gear input shaft/5th gear main shaft ______
Reverse idler gear set: reverse gear input shaft/reverse idle gear ______
Reverse main shaft gear gear set: Reverse gear idler shaft/reverse gear main shaft ______
What is the final drive ratio? ______
5.Using the above figures, state the final gear ratio for each transaxle gear.
GEARFINAL GEAR RATIO
1st______
2nd______
3rd______
4th______
5th (O/D)______
Reverse______
6.Using the parts that you laid out in step 1, explain power flow through the transaxle to your instructor. Your description should include:
a.Rotational speed of each gear—1000 rpm engine speed.
b.Direction of rotation of each gear—counterclockwise input.
c.Relative torque of each gear—100 ft.-lb. of input torque.
d.Synchronizer action for entering each gear.
e.Shift fork position for each gear.
______
______
______
______
______
______

7. Once you have explained the powerflow to the instructor, remove the final drive assembly from the transaxle. Inspect the gear teeth for any abnormalities and record your findings: ______

8. Disassemble the differential side gears and inspect housing, gears, shaft, and bearings for wear. Record your findings:______

9. What is used for the vehicle speed sensor? (gears, tone ring and sensor) ______

10. Reassemble the final drive and measure endplay or preload. Record the measurements: ______
