Installation Pre-requisites

1. PowerCenter Clients

Data Validation Option requires PowerCenter to act as a backend and to obtain existing table metadata and test execution information. DVO leverages the PowerCenter architecture to obtain source and target table metadata and generate the necessary PowerCenter metadata to execute these tests within PowerCenter.

Since DVO depends on PowerCenter, each user workstation must have the PowerCenter client tools installed before installing DVO.

2. Environment Variables

Set the following environment variables prior to installing DVO:

INFA_HOME=C:\Informatica\9.5.0\clients\PowerCenterClient

HOW TO SET ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES

1. To set the environment variables in Windows 7, navigate to “Control Panel\System and Security\System”.

2. Click on “Advanced System Settings” in the left side of the screen.

3. Click on “Environment Variables” at the bottom of the “System Properties” pop-up window.

4. Under the “System Variables” table, click “New.” Fill out the fields for the environment variable and click “OK”. To save the environment variables, click “OK” on the “Environment Variables” pop-up window.

3. PowerCenter Repository Connections

Before you connect to a repository in the DVO client tool, you must first successfully connect to that repository in the PowerCenter clients. To configure PowerCenter to access a repository, open PowerCenter Designer. Click on “Repository”  “Configure Domains”. Select the name of the repository that you will be using as your target repository in DVO and then click “OK”. After you configure the repository connection, connect to the repository by right-clicking on the repository name.

For example, to access the WA_DES designated DVO repository (DES_PC_DVO_DV), you first need to configure your PowerCenter client to connect to that repository and successfully connect to that repository once in PowerCenter. You need to complete these steps in PowerCenter before attempting to connect to the DES_PC_DVO_DV repository in the DVO client.

Installing DVO

1. DVO Installation Steps

STEP 1:

Launch the DVO installer. Double click the installation file to start installation

Click Next.

Click “Next” to begin installation.

STEP 3:

Set the destination directory path. You can leave the default settings. Click “Next”.

STEP 4:

You can choose to create a Start Menu folder for DVO. Click “Next”. DVO will begin installing.

STEP 5:

Leave the box “Run PowerCenter Data Validation Option” checked. You need to run DVO once to create a Data Validator user preferences folder on your workstation. You can choose whether or not to create a DVO desktop icon and a DVO quick launch icon.

STEP 6:

When you run DVO for the first time, DVO will prompt you to configure your user preferences. Click “OK” to open the preferences screen, but do not fill out any fields. Click “Cancel” to close the preferences configuration screen. DVO will ask if you want to exit without configuring your preferences. Click “Yes” and exit DVO.

STEP 7:

Navigate to “C:\Users\<your username>\DataValidator”. Delete the preferences.xml file inside this directory. Copy the file named yourname>-preferences.xml into this directory. Rename the file you just copied to preferences.xml. This file contains your user preference information.

2. DVO Target Repository Configuration Steps

STEP 1:

Open DVO and right-click on “INFA Repositories”. From the menu that appears, select “Add Repository”.

STEP 2:

You need to create a DVO target repository. The target repository stores the PowerCenter objects created by DVO for test execution. The target repository also contains the connection objects used by DVO to run tests. Database connections always originate from the DVO target repository.

Set the following fields as seen in the screenshot above:

  • Name: Choose a descriptive name for the DVO target repository. This name identifies the repository in the DVO client.
  • Client location: C:\Informatica\9.5.1\clients\PowerCenterClient\client\bin
  • PowerCenter Version: 9.5
  • PowerCenter Domain: Name of the domain that contains the PowerCenter Repository that you will use as the DVO target repository..
  • Repository: Name of the repository that you will use as the DVO target repository. Username: Your PowerCenter username.
  • Password: Your PowerCenter password.
  • Security Domain: If you use follow instructions in manual.
  • Check “Contains Target Repository” to define this repository as the DVO target repository.
  • Target Folder: Enter the name of the folder that will contain the PowerCenter objects generated by DVO to run tests.
  • Integration Service: Enter the name of the integration service associated with the PowerCenter repository that you will use as the DVO target repository.
  • Data Validation Repository Connection: Enter the name of the Data Validation Repository connection that your administrator configured in PowerCenter Workflow Manager.

STEP 3:

Test the connection for the DVO target repository. Once the test completes successfully, click “Save”. DVO will import the target repository.

STEP 4:

Refresh the objects in the DVO target repository by right-clicking on the repository and selecting “Refresh Repository”  “Everything”. This step populates the DVO target repository with sources, targets, and database connections.
