I am Akram Alajilly, an immigrant from Iraq who came to the United States in 2010 to find a better life. I arrived with an Iraqi bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and 8 years of work experience in Iraq, Dubai, and Malaysia. Since I live in the United States I need to get an American degree and establish a career in the industry in the United States. In order to work towards my goal, again; I need to gain an American degree in a school that have some of the top advanced technologies programs.

In order to get an American degree, I had to establish a plan of action. The first step I needed to do was to improve my understanding and use of English. I enrolled in the ESL program at J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College, which I completed within three semesters. The next step is to gain an American bachelor’s degree. I was taught that engineering is comprised of two parts - one is how to build the construction and the other one is how to maintain cost while still providing quality. Since I know how to build already, I decided that I should focus on how to manage cost. This objective led me to think about studying accounting and business management. Now that I have my major for my American degree determined, I decided to take classes at J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College towards an associate’s degree in business concentrating on the accounting track. My next step is to choose sophisticated school to get my degree from. Finding any job in the U.S. I competitor. The biggest part of this competition is what school you obtained your degree from. So I have to find a really highly classed school in order to compete strongly in the industry. Since I moved to the U.S. in 2010, I lived in the state of Virginia and ever since, I started looking for good schools in this state in order to enroll in one of them to get my degree. I have many friends that moved to this state and studied in it’s schools, all of them agreed that Virginia commonwealth university is one of the best schools in the state of Virginia in the major of business administration. this school since it was established in 1838 it was known one of the best schools in the quality of teaching and the rate of tuition. So it was clear to me that I need to attend Virginia Commonwealth University to get my bachelor’s degree in business management with a concentration in accounting. I could then combine my knowledge from my Iraqi degree in civil engineering and the new knowledge from my American degree to meet both aspects of engineering allowing me to have all the skills needed to start my career.
